Onion Powered iPod
November 24th 2008 01:56
In the 'that takes the cake' stakes - this one certainly ranks right up there.
Apparently a young lad by the name of Owen Louis definitely has bragging rights when it comes to environmental friendliness - given he charges his iPod using onions!
The music fan is reportedly so worried about the amount of electricity his MP3 player uses, he powers it up using the vegetables.
According to metro.co.uk, Owen, 21, bores two holes in an onion, soaks it in an energy drink then sticks a USB cable into it - and can charge his iPod for an hour.
'I was watching TV with my laptop on and my iPod playing and thought, "How much electricity must I be using?",' he said.
'A friend showed me the experiment as a laugh but I thought it was the greatest thing I have ever seen, and do it religiously every day.'
Owen, from Portsmouth, said the idea was a foolproof way of staying green as the onion decomposes and the drink bottle can be recycled once finished with.
To take things a step further - a physics lecturer from St Vincent College in Gosport, Hampshire, said almost all vegetables could power iPods because they contain ions which react with energy drinks to create a charge.
'The only problem is you have no control over how long it may work for ... and it can be smelly,' he added.

I think it is wonderful news and dont doubt that it works, although im sure it wont be long until a smear campaign is onto it, peeling back the layers with doubts?
Thanks for the enlightenment.

I expect you'd be just the one to try it out . . . to either prove or disprove..
I still find it a little hard to believe.
Cheers

but that is pretty cool...
Have a feeling you would damage the USB eventually by sticking it in onions though...
