Musical Resurrections - Your Favourite Re-Mix
August 14th 2008 23:07
Don't you just love it when teens tell you how cool a song is - only to find out that the damned thing is 10, 20 even 30 years old - just 'rebadged'.
We've all likely culprits - so it was no suprise that recently Miss 11 pleasantly surprised us all by proudly announcing that Kid Rock's newest single was in fact a remix of both Warren Zevon's Werewolves of London and the old Sweet Home Alabama ditty popularised by Lynyrd Skynyrd (thank godness that the small amount of musical history we've managed to impart on our daughters has sunk in).
That said - there have been a number of great re-mixes over the years.
From Jessica Simpson's rendition of the Nancy SInatra classic - These Boots Are Made for Walkin' through to Counting Crows take on the Joni Mitchell classic Big Yellow Taxi, there's been umpteen re-releases - so what tops your list?

I remember a year or two back a station here in Sydney that prides itself of 'new music first' started playing a song - which escapes me now - but kicked off with the first 16 bars of ELO's Don't Bring Me Down.
Kids loved it - if only they knew.

Somethin' Stupid by Robbie Williams and Nicole Kidman (originally by Sinatra and his daughter)
Hey Jude by Joe Anderson
Unchained Melody by Gareth Gates
Time After Time by TRUSTcompany
and (don't kill me for this) We Will Rock You by British boy-band Five. They also have another song called Everybody Get Up which uses the famous "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" guitar instrumental.
and who could forget the Fugees' classic Killin' Me Softly

Five!
I think that beautiful Quebec weather is playing havoc with your listening habits
They're great choices - didn't see any of them coming . . .
Thanks for stopping by - hope to see you again real soon.

Small Thoughts on Big Questions
I remember when Tone Loc released 'Funky Cold Medina' (man, am I dating myself) and being a kid I thought it was the coolest tune. I eventually realized that he ripped off a KISS riff.

I wouldn't worry about dating yourself.
Most annoy me too - though I have to admit I quite think Kid Rock's version is clever - and besides at least that version isn't a doofa doofa doofa - big bass, no treble punked up, indistinguishable bastardisation.
Brings a couple of classics back to the masses too.
Cheers

But when you say remixes, do you mean just covers (like on my list above) or songs with original lyrics that get pasted on old beats/instrumentals? Because my list gets a lot longer if the latter is included.

I like a lot of remixes and modern versions of Sinatra songs - Nicole Kidman and Robbie Williams' Somethin' Stupid, and all that Michael Buble tries his hand at, as well as the remix of Nancy's Bang Bang.
Also don't mind the remix of Australian Crawl's Reckless, though still prefer the original.
