TV Shows That 'Jumped The Shark'
March 1st 2010 22:39
Jumping The Shark is the moment when an established show changes in such a significant manner in an attempt to stay fresh that it almost borders on the ridiculous. It can be defined as that moment viewers realise that the show has finally run out of ideas. It has reached its peak, it will never be the same again, and from now on it's all downhill.
Whether its a complete plot change, character assassination or introduction of a new character - the result in invariable - Mood Whiplash - in an unbelievable manner.
The expression originates from the episode - which many of us still recall - of Happy Days in which Fonzie literally jumped over a shark on water-skis.
But which TV shows excelled at the practice?
Would the "who shot JR" jump from the crew at Dallas make your list or perhaps the cliffhanger moment for Dynasty when the entire cast gathered for a large family wedding that is interrupted by armed terrorists who open fire in the church at anyone and everyone?
Or how about Rosanne - when we were all subjected to husband Dan leaving Roseanne having admitted he had fallen in love with someone else - having just recently won the lottery - when it was bizarrely revealed that most of what we had seen was fictional, all coming from the mind of Roseanne who was a writer.
Scores more I'm sure - but now its over to you folks . . .
