Weird Kids TV
March 31st 2010 03:25
Is it just me - or does every generation have its fair share of just plain werid kids programs?
From psychedelic '70s to the other-worldly '80s and perplexing present-day, children's programming has a storied history of leaning toward the bizarre.
And though "bizarre" is in the eye of the beholder, it's hard to deny that there's not something a little offbeat with not only the creators of the following, but the TV execs who thought it was a good idea.
Let's face it, where on earth do you get the inspiration to create the iconic clay figure Gumby and his pony Pokey?
Morphing into squares, emerging from walls, and breaking off into dozens of pieces - this little green guy originally aired in 1957 and was actually brought back in 1988 for "Gumby Adventures" - go figure!
Then there was the boy named Jimmy who is beckoned by a magical boat, which he boards, and is quickly turned into an evil pirate ship by a witch (Billie Hayes).
So he bails from the boat, washes ashore, and is rescued by H.R. Pufnstuf.
Seems to me that it wasn't only Jimmy who was on some kind of 'trip' when this one was dished up to audiences.
And so to the cute little blue people, who lived in mushroom houses and battled the evil Gargamel. But... what were they, exactly? Perhaps we'll never know.
Help me out folks! What rates with you as some of the weirdest kids shows to have been let loose on television?

My little one is currently fixated with In the Night Garden with charaters such as; Iggle Piggle with a red blanket attached permanently to his hand, Makka Pakka has an obession with stones, Upsy Daisy is apparently the only 'upsey one' and squeeks all the time, and then there are the Tombliboos that get a kick out of drinking Pinky Ponk juice..
Weird beyond words.
