Memories of Christmas' Past
December 22nd 2011 20:34
You know you're starting to well . . . ripen . . . when you start doing that thing your father used to annoy you with as a kid, and rekindle what life was like - 'back in the day'.
Well, my time has come and for those of you who have read this far, I suspect you too will have a few fond memories of Christmas past.
For mine it's long hot days, when the week leading up to the big day could never go quick enough. It was about playing cricket outside using the clothes line post as a set of stumps, eating mulberries and running under the sprinkler.
It was about catching cicadas, watching Smiley, Merry Christmas Charlie Brown and visiting great aunts and uncles then indulging in hot pre-Christmas lunch.
It was about the obligatory carols by candlelight at the local school and dreading that your mother would ask if you wanted to meet Santa at the local shopping centre.
It was about eating coconut ice, not allowed to touch the ham until Christmas day and listening the bottles of home made ginger beer exploding in the laundry outside.
It was all this and more - most of which now only lingers in my mind - which in some respects is kinda nice.
But perhaps you have your own memories of Christmas Past?
