Happy 80th Birthday Mickey!
November 17th 2008 20:15
Having re-visited Disneyland earlier this year with Mrs Nice Guy and the Family Von Nice Guy singers - how could I possibly let this day go by without mention of Mickey Mouse's birthday.
No doubt we all have fond memories of Mickey and his pals - Donald, Pluto, Goofy and of course his one and only Minnie - but let it be known that Disney officially endorses November 18 as our iconic hero's offically birthday.
Co-inciding with the first the first cartoon with synchronized sound Mickey appears as a mischievous deckhand on a riverboat, and plays "Turkey in the Straw" utilizing an animal menagerie as his instruments.
After unsuccessfully trying to make a deal to record through RCA Walt contracted with the Cinephone process and finally recorded the soundtrack with a 15-piece band and his own squeaks for Mickey.
Directed by Walt and released at the Colony Theater in New York on November 18, 1928, it is recognised as the date for the birth of Mickey Mouse.
So happy 80th Mickey - you're holding your years remarkably well.

He certainly has brought smiles to the faces of millions - and seeing how littlies faces light up when he makes an entrance - is as they say - priceless.

Fantasia's hard to top. Though I do have a soft spot for the very early stuff that we just won't see again.
Thanks for stopping by.

Age shall not weary him . . .
Yep - didn't he originally go by another name prior to Mickey?
