Who Is The Coolest Tough Guy?
November 20th 2007 21:30
For reasons best known to myself, I managed to find time to sit down and with a long time mate and watch Dirty Harry last night.
It was, in essence, a trip down memory lane for us both - given the last time we indulged in this little escapade - we were 17, still at school and bulletproof.
Times have changed apparently, but tough guys (no matter how old) we decided, were still cool!
Pontificating, we mused over some of many actors of stage and screen who have played hard-nosed tough guy roles - and came up with our three coolest.
Given the circumstances - we believed our choices would stand up well in most instances.
1) Clint Eastwood
2) Al Pacino
3) Robert DeNiro
Sure - there are a multitude of others - and for the want of record - coming in a close fourth was John Wayne with special mention to Samuel L Jackson, Spencer Tracy, Charles Bronson and Steve McQueen.
So add, subtract or deconstruct our list.
Who would you rank as the world's coolest tough guy?

We actually tossed around Harrison Ford and Sean Connery - in the same breath as Humphrey Bogart . . . so you're in good company.

As I said to Lara M - we tossed Humphrey around (so to speak) - and concur with your sentiments entirely.

Was waiting for someone to bring up JT!
And while he also played the whole Tony Monaro in Saturday Night Fever classic - to a tee - we had to discount him fairly early in the piece - given his less than tough guy stance in Michael, Urban Cowboy, The Two of Us. Phenomonen, Look Who's Talking etc.
Think he's great though - just wouldn't make my top 3.
But I'll stand corrected if weight of numbers goes his way.
Thanks for sharing - you're always welcome to visit.

'Flamin' Alf Stewart . . .
Absolute gem of a response.
Of course they don't come any tougher - unless it's King Gee.

You kinda got it there in Robert De Niro, I like this guy's work so much.
I loved JT in Swordfish and Face Off.
Tough guy, tough guy ... let me see... I can't think of anymore...
...wait a minute, a couple coming in now....
James T Kirk.
James Bond

Robert Redford in Spy Games (brilliant).
Paul Newman as Cool Hand Luke.

Frodo Baggins
I'm sure there are more... and as usual your question will haunt my day, as multiple answers pop up during routine activities, like pumping gas.*chuckle*
It's been fun (again),

My day wouldn't be complete now without your smiling and generous input.
Have to say - that you've got an interesting (to say the least) list of tough guys there - and who am I to question their legitimacy to the throne of being the coolest?
Yep - it's always fun to have you drop by.

Lee Marvin - damn - he escaped our calculations completely - must've been up to our 4th strawberry milk by then.
. . . and yep will go with Peckinpah - the Wild Bunch and Straw Dogs were pretty cool efforts.
Hope you managed to make it last weekend.
Cheers

Lawrence Fishburn actually made the original cut on our top 25 - but fell off the chart somewhere between milkshake no. 3 and no. 5.
Interesting choices though.
Now as for the cast of Oz . . .

Mr T - complete with all that damned bling - was pretty cool in The A-Team - but probably lost a bit of cred in Rocky III - still not a bad choice.
Chuck Norris - now there's one that didn't pop up on the radar.
Thanks

You know - would never have thought of Johnny Depp let alone Matt Damon. But Nicholas Cage is a pretty convincing tough guy for sure.

Marlon Brando and that whole biker jacket look is absolutely compelling. It's a wonder no has mentioned him (or James Dean for that matter) earlier.
Clarke Gable - hmmmmmm - smarmy - coiffured or debonair - sure - but tough guy - perhaps a little short of the mark in my books.
Nice call on Brando though.
