Music To My Ears - and Yours!
February 18th 2008 00:43
Tomorrow starts a new chapter in my life.
Well more a page than a chapter really – having been given the opportunity to learn the ropes as a radio DJ.
Nothing too exciting – given my starting point is through what can loosely be described as a commercial radio station here in Sydney – but probably better described as commercial/community based station.
Yep – not only do I get to learn how and when to push all the buttons – but the station’s board believe that within a month I’ll be ready to have my own program – most probably on a Tuesday night between 7 and 10.
I’ll still have my day job of course – but the thought of taking that first step in the world of wireless (what a quaint term) is really quite exciting.
Back announcing everything from The Eagles to Supertramp, Donna Summer to Orleans – the 10,000 or so listeners the station boasts will hopefully enjoy the catalogue as much as I will playing it for them.
Gold dreams of course cost no more than silver ones – and I guess perseverance, luck and some hard work will determine where it all goes in the future – but for now at least – there’s a new light under the bushel.
Would like a catchy sign-off too – if anyone has any ideas – something to end the program on each night – like “thanks for having me at your place – and remember if you can’t be good – be careful”.
Any ideas?

How about, Mr. Nice Guy signing off with a promise to be occasionally not such a nice guy. ( anyway you'll get my drift, I think the other is a little 'dated')
If you do as well as you've done here you'll be right up there.
This is very exciting for you I can tell. Good luck.

You'll love it! I did a stint here at my local radio station for a while and also loved it. For me it didn;t go anywhere (because of other commitments), but that didn;t deter from the experience of it all.
There are community radio stations in most suburbs and no one should miss this opportunity... one word : beware the gnashing teeth of clashing ego's.... (hahaha)...
How 'bout :
If you can't be good, be careful...
and if you can't be careful....
... remember the date?

Going with your avatar (and his many catchphrases), how about;
"Would you believe..." followed by something! Trivia, statistic, this day in time, etc....!
...but I figure you won't be in Maxwell Smart mode on air! so maybe not...
You said it though;
How about;
"Thanks for turning on, tuning in...I'm popping out..."
(to paraphrase Timothy Leary!)
...and don't forget to share the frequency!

Apparently this one's a little larger than most (but still relatively small in the sceme of things) - does have an OB van that travels around the place doing broadcasts at events - so that's something as well.
Yep - gotta start somewhere - and just getting to share my kinda music with the rest of those 10,000 or so regular listeners that will have to put up with me - makes it all worthwhile.
Look out Randy Vanwarmer, Roger Voudouris, Robbie Dupree and all you other one hit wonders - Mr Nice Guy is giving you all a re-birth.
Thanks for the encouragement.

Well done you!
How about:
"If you can't be good, then be good at it!"
I did a bit of radio at the local community radio station when I was in highschool. It was fun. Back in the day when there were 2 turntables and real records to play.

Might be nice to have 1 or 2 vinyl requests a week though - it just sounds sooooo good to hear the crackle goin on.
Now all I've gotta do is get my head around the panel operation . . .
Thanks too for your suggestion on a signoff . . . loved Cib's idea of growling - unique if nothing else.
Cheers
PS: How's the professional writing career going?

CONGRATULATIONS friend! So glad to hear. I believe it will be a wonderful change of pace for you. I know that you are a fan of the vinyl! (HEE HEE).
As you know I worked evenings at a local radio station. Here are some insider tips
1. 50% of my wardrobe really did consist of free t-shirts: t-shirts given to us for participating in charity events,concerts, movie and record promtions.
2. Evening DJs get propositioned more than any other air-shift, usually from under-age females. Being seduced by any of these little pixies is also known as “walking the jail-bait tightrope”. Even as a female jock .... this was an accurate statement.
3. “Rule of the Phones”: if she sounds sexy, more times than not, she isn’t. Generally, the ladies who call into Radio stations, in the hopes of luring the DJ into some kind of rendevouz, fall into one of these categories: 1) someone Richard Simmons should be praying next to 2) Stalkers or 3) 14 year-old Lolitas who are fully prepared to testify in court.
4. Radio people really ARE weird. Seriously. Some of them are close to psychotic. Most probably fall into the middle: safely bizarre. Why? Nobody knows. The best we can figure, there is something about the mixture of power to control a medium and the ability to perform on it which attracts this one segment of society which could not possibly function within the confines of a standard, 9 - 5 job. Is it any wonder more and more health care plans in Radio now offer psychological benefits? Mmmm?
5. Yes, we really DO get fired as much as you’ve heard. Radio people get fired because formats change, because ratings go down, because Radio stations get sold, because of budget cuts, because of vendettas, because some drink too much and don’t show up for work, because some drink too much and DO show up for work,
6. When seen in person we are a disappointing lot. We usually look: taller, shorter, fatter, older, and younger than listener's thought. We never equal listener's imagination.

Actually I've got two articles in this month's Sydney's Child (and the rest of the cities) so woohoo for me
If you do use Cib's idea for a sign off, then I'm gonna tune in just to hear that

Just finished putting together a couple of compilation disc's as a matter of fact . . . a 70's CD, a one hit wonders CD and a Vault CD - that in itself was a little fun.
Fingers crossed.
Thanks for your enthusiasm - it's infectious.

Larraby, myself, 99 and of course The Chief are thrilled.
Roger was of course invited to the premiere - but his managed (someone by the name of Ziegfried) tastefully declined.
