What’s your favourite music video clip?
May 20th 2008 22:59
With the proliferation of music video clips – my mind can’t help but hark back to the very first screening of MTV when I was a teen and of course the now iconic “Video Killed The Radio Star” soundtrack by the Buggles.
Since then of course – up and coming performers have come and gone - but their music clips live on.
From Robert Palmer and his “Simply Irresistable” clip in the early 80’s through to Jamiroquai’s, "Virtual Insanity", Radio Head’s “Just” and my personal favourite , Christopher Walken and Fat Boy Slim’s “Weapon of Choice”, there have been some absolute classics.
Sure – Michael Jackson went a ‘little’ over the top with “Thriller” – and Basement Jaxx might not be quite your cuppa tea – but you’ve gotta take your hat off to those who help visualize the airwaves.

I'll check it out. Jack Johnson's a fav in our house - due mostly to his laid back nature and penchant for the surf.
Cheers and thanks for the tip

Film & TV on DVD
Haven't had time to comment on your site for a while, how are things going?
As for music videos The Jackson 5's "Can you Feel It" blew me away as a young un'
Duran Duran's Girls on Film needs a mention too because of its ummm appeal
The Beastie Boys "Sabotage' clip is insane.
Massive Attack's Protection also jumps to mind...tons more but that is three I really dig.

Ouch - the mere mention of Miami Vice sends a pastel jacket and loafer (sans socks) shiver down my spine.
Totally agree about the Beastie Boys though.

Me either! Also can't believe no one has gone with the Bee Gees - Spirits Having Flown clip or Stayin Alive. Crimes against humanity.
Soundgardens clip always reminded me of the Michael Jackson video where people morphed into one another - don't ask me why.
Must check out the Blind Melons clip though.
Stay well.

It was a shame Peter Gabriel kinda went a little off the tracks musically and emotionally after Sledgehammer - but it was certainly a good last hurrah.
The animinations and computer work in Black Bugs was pretty cool from memory - and pretty colourful.

Fatboy Slims "Weapon Of Choice" where Christopher Walken dances around
Paula Abduls "Opposites Attract" where she has a duet with a cartoon
Billy Oceans "Get Out Of My Dreams" also goes half cartoon with fishes swimming around him
Chers "If I Could Turn Back Time" straddling the navy cannon
Billy Joels "We Didnt Start The Fire" where he sums up all the events of modern history in one room
i hope you know this post has caused me to play bad 80s film clips all arvo lol

Fatboy (see my post) was right up as a personal fav - Walken is outrageously good.
Now as for Cher - and the phallic nature of the whole cannon thing . . . I think there's real issues here.
And ain't it fun checking em all out!

Must be old - but never really thought much of the song - clever as it was - and the clip - well a nice 3 minute history lesson.
Judging by the public acclaim - I'd say I was in the minority.

Morgan, you loved it at the time? Weren't you like 6 or something?
It is actually a pretty clever song, I think the point is that the overall fate of the human race was determined long before anyone who is alive today was born. Humans seem condemned to make the same mistakes over and over. We inherited a mess and a mess we will pass onto our children.
Basically we are screwed. But somehow in the midst of war and tragedy we find a way to live and take comfort in celebrity, art, sport, literature etc.
Dunno, that's what i get out of it. i just watched the video for the first time in almost two decades. How funny is he when he turns the table over?
I love how it's "rock n' roll and cola wars" that tip him over the edge.

Also, I am going with the ones that were at the "cutting edge" of the music video era.
Almost all Duran Duran videos, Van Halen(Hot For Teacher (Which by the way was one of my wedding songs, I married a 4th grade teacher. Sadly she wouldn't get married in an outfit like Wayne Gretzky's wife wore in that video.)Panama, Dreams, Right Now), David Lee Roth solo stuff (Going Crazy, Yankee Rose). Many hairdbands on the list. Especially anything by Def Leppard. Headbangers Ball ruled! Metallica's, "One". That morphing Michael JAckson video you mentioned, Black or White. "She's A Beauty" by The Tubes.
Lick It Up by KISS (no makeup debut, even if it was just Vinnie Vincent, and Eric Carr instead of Ace Frehley, and Peter Criss.)
and I leave you while flipping cue cards with random things written on them to the ground, as I am also the first to mention INXS videos.

Gosh I don;t know if it's just my age or what? Perhaps it all began back in the late 80's when I first switched the TV off and stopped watching the Satruday monring music video clips regularly ... but for me there are no more good ones left.
The few times I have switched the TV on to "catch up' on trends (no use being out of touch completely), *chuckle* well you tell me...? each song is represented by a mini porn film, often with no bearing ont he actual lyrics or meaning of the music at all???
What's with that?
..and no it;s not just me, my teenagers don't like that stuff either.
Maybe we are just weird, but Thriller did just that, at least (back then) they tried to make music cinematically interesting and mentally stimulating?
Video certainly killed the music in my eyes, and especially Crap... oops I mean wrap. Yo bro, shake it shake it, baby putti' that ting in dere, baby, baby grabbin' your booty...
Yuk.!
