Do You Have A Nickname?

December 13th 2007 22:57
Do you have a nickname?

What is it, and where did you get it?

Did you get lumbered with one in High School that you've come to either to loathe or love - or is your nickname one that your family have bestowed upon you since you were way too young to remember.

Did you - like a friend of mine - actually invent and perpetrate their own - for reasons best known to yourself - or perhaps you have multiple aliases - dependent on which social clique you happen to be with.

Is your nickname simply an abbreviation or derivation of your surname or is there some tale behind your moniker.

As I prepare to meet up with a few old school buddies tonight "Brownie", "Kel", "Mood", "Reg", "Pierce" and "Stew" - none of which are their real names - I'd be interested to hear about yours.

As you know, my nickname is simply my real name shortened to 'Mich'. That's what I have always been called by everyone. Mum also calls me LouLou when she's trying to annoy me. Dad calls me Princess.

When I worked in the country I was called Clarkie. Just because that's how it is. Lol.

Mich/LouLou/Princess/Clarkie

It's a great Aussie tradition isn't it - to simply add 'ie' onto the end of a surname - when we're stumped for something else - creative bunch aren't we?

Thanks for dropping by

I had a few, my sister would call me Tizzy and I loved that, even as an adult. It made me feel loved by her.

My dad and aunt called me Pudding which I didn't like especially as I grew up, as I felt fat. They finally got the message a few years ago that it wasn't really that complimentary, not to me anyway. They didn't mean any hurt, they said it was because I was cuddly. To me, that just meant they found another euphemism for fat. So the best thing they could do was to forget that name because I didn’t like it.

Dad also called me Half-Pint and Tatty Head. Halt-pint because I was short - that one didn't bother me, I didn't and don’t care about height. Tatty Head was OK, I had a doll that I called that so I suppose it was quite sweet.

As an adult, my sister had other names for me, but mostly they weren't that nice so I won't go into those!!

Interesting question as always, MNG

Trace

Don't quite know what to address you as now?

Tatty Head is a cracker. Doesn't quite roll off the tongue though.

Tizzy is great - nice that you associate it with being loved.

You're always welcome and it always a pleasure.

Hi MNG

After I wrote my answer, I decided that the one I love the most is plain old Trace.

Yes, Tatty Head is a classic and pretty unique. I was happy with that one, but it makes me laugh when I think about it as my doll was an old rag doll, with ginger hair, one eye hanging out and was definitely dishevelled, but I loved it and it went everywhere with me. And when Tatty Head became my nickname, I felt loved too. My dad still calls me that sometimes and it makes me smile.

I don't really have any nicknames. I get "Kyles" or "Kyz" but that's about it.

One of the more charming nicknames I've had was one that my dad came up with as a young child. He called me "piles". According to him, not because it rhymed with Kyles but as in 'hemmorhoids', because in his words, I was a "pain in the ass".

My sister Jane was always called Fred by my family until she was a teenager. When she was a toddler mum could never keep clothes on her, she'd just take them off. So they started calling her "Freddy Few-Clothes". It stuck for about 15 yrs. My dad still calls her that sometimes.

Hey Kylie

LIved next door to a kid whose family called him Fred.

Didn't realise his name was Greg until I was 15.

I've never actually heard my father address me by name to be brutally honest.

In fact - it was a little embarrassing when I introduced him to a social golf clique associated with my place of employ - and he kept referring to 'Sam'. Of course both he and I knew to whom he was referring - but no one had the courage to ask him who Sam was.

When I explained to the masses that I was Sam (named after the politically incorrect Little Black Sambo - who always seemed to be getting into mischief) - there were more than a few smirks.

Thanks for sharing.

I've had various nicknames...and not all of them flattering. I didn't have one until I ended up being called after another guy whom I apparently resembled who had already left! Then I was lumbered with a nickname of a geek on a popular saturday morning tv show. In fact I have had people from that time come up and ask me what my real name is simply because they only ever knew mee by my nickname. These days I have been told I look like Spiderman, Harry Potter, the main character from lord of the rings (I think because he also played spiderman). So many faces...one person.

To coin an old, old phrase - "Call me anything you like - just don't call me late for dinner".

I grow a lot of my own herbs and vegetables. And there is a rumour going around that I might be a witch so a few years ago my daughter started calling me Herb Witch. So now I use that nickname online all the time.

Every now and then I'll meet someone out in the real world that I've been talking to online. When I tell them my real name all I get is a blank stare, but when I say my online name is Herb Witch the light of recognition goes off!

Dear Lynn Smythe

I know a Herb Gamin, a Herb Reynolds and a Herb Gusstufsson - but I've not had the pleasure to officially meet Herb Witch.

With an ounce of luck - one day we will cross paths.

Thanks for sharing

PS: Next time you're at a cafe - I'll be the one wearing a sprig of rosemary.

Jazzman was given to me by the boys in a band I used to belong to in the 1950s and has stuck to me ever since.
There was a Country Western band called "The Tumbleweeds" I played guitar, banjo and double bass, and played banjo and bass in a Jazz band called "The Port Jackson Jazz Band"

When we went to Community Radio I still had the "Jazzman" title so it has stuck.

When my old father used to call me Ivan I knew it was time to make myself invisible or suffer

Hey Jazzman

Just so long as you don't get Jasmine - huh!

Yeah - when my mother addressed me by name - you knew it was time to hi-tail it too.

Must be a universal code for kids.

Funny how things stick huh?

Friend of mine has been known as Fuj (as in Fuji from McHales Navy or Fuji Film) - and none of us can recall how it started.

Thanks for dropping in and sharing.

I never had a nickname. My mother did not want my sister or I to have one. Unfortunately my sister Julie is known by her friends as Jules.

My family on the other had had many
Uncle Henry was Hank
Uncle Daniel was Boone
Aunt Ina was Punk (she was tall and gangly)
Aunt Eugenia was Goldie (she loved earning money)
Aunt Bernice was Billie
Aunt Lillain was Liillie
Uncle Wendell was Butcher
Grandad Wendell was Pete

With nicknames like Punk, Butcher and Goldie - it's understandable.
