Obama and November 22

November 17th 2008 00:26
Obama
According to the Independent on Sunday – ‘when millions watched Barack Obama give his history-making victory speech in Grant Park on election night, one thing stood out starkly – the bulletproof screen surrounding him.’

‘But just how serious is the threat of assassination to the President-elect?

Fanatical rednecks inclusive of driven unstables such as Shawn Adolf and his cousin Tharin Gartrell and white supremacist ideologists now have the motivation they need to risk their own lives, if necessary, to prevent a black man from entering the Oval Office.

(Or, as a friend reported Adolf as saying: "No nigger should ever live in the White House.")
It unfortunately appears to be a case of ‘when’ and not ‘if’.

Posts including Gunnshots: Straight from The Hip are just the tip of the public sentiment iceberg which is laying dorment.

My fear of course is that Barack Obama, his family and progressive, rational thinking people of the world will be robbed of the chance to see a true statesman, father, and leader.

I'm certain come November 22, the date of former President Kennedy's slaying as he travelled in an open car in a motorcade in Dallas - will be the first of many high priority days for 'All the Presidents Men'.

It's frightening, but we should talk and write about it. Anything should be done to prevent the USA being sunk into the chaos that such an assault would mean.

Conspiracy theories aside - I suspect it's not only the loons, white supremeists and nutters out there that feel the need.

Chaos - would be putting it mildly.

The people who express the sentiments of hatred and killing of a political leader based on the colour of his skin tell me that the country is not ready for serious change. Like trying to teach a child how to use a potty when they still are too comfortable in diapers. The feces will still come out and create havoc when it's least expected.

It's on the minds of many people. It was one of the first things my friends and I discussed when he was first put forward as a serious candidate. Hasn't there already been one foiled attempt?

It would be a very scary place to be if anything does happen. The US would be torn apart.

I agree . . . no doubt a double whammy for any nutter.

Look to cement your place in history through an outrageous/misguided act and send a nation into a heady political/social mallee.

Wonder what the sign-up rate's been lately for the Secret Service and those prepared to take a bullet for the President.

i think Obama has good reason to be very cautious, but i hope fear does not prevent him from making appearances or allowing his family to lead a (relatively) normal life

i think its important that he maintains a confident facade even if he employs a hundred security staff behind the scenes

gun sales across the USA have gone up because the public believe they need to stock up incase Obama tightens gun control

The Associated Press reported late last week that in October, as an Obama win looked increasingly likely, there were more than 108,000 additional background checks for gun purchases than in October 2007, a 15 percent increase. Those checks were up about 8 percent for the year as of Oct. 26, according to the FBI.
Really Long Link

i think Obama is coming into a fairly hostile environment, and there are probably more threats on his life than his PR team choose to report

ive noticed hes still doing fairly normal things like going to the gym, lets hope he doesnt get scared away from normality by these threats

those white supremicists were the second plot that has been uncovered, the first was in August, the attempt was scheduled for the DNC convention, the culprits admitted that they had come to Denver to kill Obama, and said their plan was to "shoot Obama from a high vantage point using a rifle sighted at 750 yards."

How they uncover these things is amazing - and a little scary sometimes - given the surveillance equipment and information they must have at their fingertips.

I agree in essence with what you say Morgan - my fear though is that one crazy - who plants himself somewhere, sometime on that grassy knol.

Let's hope for all our sake's it simply never transpires.

I thought there has been a total of three foiled assasination plots? Yeah, I think pretty much every rational person in the world knows Obama faces a higher risk than most. I'm amazed that he and his wife decided to go ahead with the campaign to be honest. Surprised but grateful. Let's hope our fears are not realised and that he gets to do some good work.

I read on the BBC that he just gave an interview to CBS and stated his intention to close Guantanamo. "I'm going to make sure we do not torture". He hasn't been inaugurated yet and already he is a better president than the last one....Okay I know that doesn't take much but still...

actually i think you may be right!

there were two reported in August, the one i talked about above was three men in late August, but in the first week of August a man called Raymond Hunter Geisel allegedly had a plot to assassinate Obama

Really Long Link

actually, being the cynic i am, i bet they capture Osama Bin Laden shortly after Barack Obama settles in . . . i find it hard to believe that they dont already know where he is, i think their covert intelligence people have been witholding the information so they could keep up the pretense that this is what these wars have been about

USA currently is being led by the worst President ever - would they assasinate the best President ever? Well, it is the US, so who knows?

Comment by Jeff Musall

I'm sure there will be more plots/attempts...what we have to have confidence in is the professionalism of the Secret Service. They take their job very personal and very serious. As for what Ruby said about bin Ladin...I have joked that he is living in an "undisclosed location" at the Bush ranch, forced to cut brush and make videos when called upon to do so...

Comment by D. Armenta

November 18th 2008 00:16
MNG, what a good post; I had a similar idea on the back burner myself.

I researched into assassination attempts on past U.S. presidents, and found that there haven't been any since Ronald Reagan's in 1980 (ref.: infoplease )

There were a few on Wikipedia for G.W. Bush, but they were pretty lame--one guy stood outside the White House fence and shot a gun into the air.

Now, whether this can be chalked up to increased security or to unanimous public satisfaction at a job well done by all presidents since Reagan (HAHA!!) remains a mystery.

I imagine that president-elect Obama will receive the same obviously extensive security that recent presidents have had. I mean, it's not like no one ever wanted to kill either of the Bushes. Weird coincidence, huh?

Ruby: Logic dictates that Bin Laden is long dead, perhaps since 2002. He was very ill with liver cancer, for which he was being treated in the U.S. prior to 9/11/01. I don't imagine one can find sophisticated medical treatment centers for cancer in the caves of Afghanistan whilst in hiding from a large portion of the world...

Not too cynical for me, Janet--I just laughed out loud!!!

I think Political Marketing figured that Bin-Laden was far more useful as a fugitive in the long run. Any time our gov. needs an excuse for attacking more innocent civilians in the Middle East, they can trot out good ol' (dead) Osama and say he's making threats against "Amerikuns" again and is now hiding in (Syria, Pakistan, Iraq--wherever they want to send more troops).

Now that people are starting to suspect that old saw, they have brought out--have you seen this? --"Son of Bin-Laden".

I don't know whether to laugh or knock my head against the wall....although the thought of the U.S. gov. using a dead guy as leverage kind of strikes me funny in a really sick way.

However,

on this particular (and updated) version of the assassination plots concerning Obama, I don't think he has anything to worry about, from the red neck morons that is.

But, maybe he will need to worry if he upsets the industrial-military complex, as Eisenhower referred to them.

The same group who got JFK.

On the idea that Oswald did it... what a joke!

In case any of you still think as much, I remember seeing on the news at the time, just some months after JFK was killed, the results of the simulation tests the USA military top marksmen used to check Oswald's rifle.

Oswald's rifle was so inaccurate they just couldn't get all te shots off in time, or even hit the vehicle I seem to remember, in the time Oswald had to shoot all those bullets... , (they set up the test as if the shots came from the Book Depository and used a moving open vehicle with sand bags for people). they discovered the sights were inaccurate, and by the way, NO BALLISTIC tests were done to prove any bullets came from Oswald's rifle!

Then there is the "magic bullet" that did a right angle turn mid air....because of the angle of trajectory meant it must of come from a different direction than where Oswald was allegedly positioned, so they had to invent a pathetic and non-sensical, utterly preposterous notion that defied the laws of physics, to justify their standpoint that Oswald acted alone, by making one bullet turn mid air.

The official story, and the highly restrained and limited Warren Commission investigation, was all utter bullshit.
A mountian of evidence and eye witness accounts were refused admission, as it later was discovered.

Finally, approximately 100 key eye witnesses who came forward initially, all died within two years of JFK's death.

Another amazing and statistically impossible result, eh wot guvner?

Many years later, another investigation was held, due to the incredible lask of faith in the original investigation and it too was a complete joke, designed to make Oswald appear guilty and the lone gunman, flying in the face of physics, eye witness testimonies and logic.

So, Obama has nothing to worry about.. if he tows the line the big end of town wants him to...

Here is a response I wrote to a hate mongering article in the name of Christ against President Elect Obama that was recently published on Hub Pages:
***************************** *******************
Good heavens! What would Jesus do? Certainly not defame Barack Obama or anyone else, I daresay. President Obama is going to need all the support and Christian love we can give him to try to pull us out of the God-awful mess created by GW Bush and his wealthier by the minute cronies.

This kind of Christian Hate Fest is not only in poor taste, it is un-Christian. I suggest you remove this offensive piece of writing and get with the program. We will all do well to put our best foot forward and pull together for the good of our nation, the world, and ourselves.

Peace be with you.

***************************** ****************************
I hope that all of us who support President Elect Obama will remember that we must concentrate on supporting and empowering him and not be made afraid by fanatics and loonies. I am glad he had a bullet-proof shield around him. That's sensible. I am glad the secret service is looking out for him. I hope and pray that they continue to do their job with competence and efficiency. Of course he is going to face threats. Those of us who support him, just need to continue to send him well-wishes and prayers and be open about our support of him.

I flagged the article I mentioned as hate mongering. You can find it here:

Is Barack Hussein Obama the Antichrist of the End Time?

If you agree with me that it is nothing more than pure hate mongering, I hope you will take a moment to flag it and request that it be removed.

We will all need to be strong and diligent together to help President Elect Obama have a safe and successful time in office.

Blessings,
Suzanne

So many comments to catch up on, here we go. . .

I remember seeing so many different shows about the JFK assassination. it has been shown time and time again that it couldn't have been Oswald. In case certain right leaning people see that comment - no I do not mean Oliver Stone's JFK film! I refer to actual reenactments (with dummies of course) and experts, and real documents.

%% wish me, love, a wishing well, to kiss and tell. a wishing well of butterfly tears. wish me, love, a wishing well, to kiss and tell. a wishing well of crocodile cheers. %%

Yes, three foiled plots. the most recent was barely a plot though. Luckily many extremist rednecks, god love em, aren't the brightest of homosapians. (for those right leaning again - that says sapians not..well you know) Their plan began with a burglary to raise money for their plot, but they got caught at that early stage.

Unfortunately I agree there will be many, many more plots and attempts. To the point where they will stop reporting about them because they will realize it is encouraging some other loonies to try just to get their name written in history forever.

As far as Bin Laden, I agree with D.'s latter statement. He's long dead. They had to keep it hidden so they could continue whatever wars they wanted to, including those against their own citizens rights under things like the Patriot Act. :: waves to government official that might be reading this right now ::: the only thing that sways me from that thinking was his son's offer to try and negotiate some sort of peaceful resolution. Why would he do so if he was dead, although maybe he simply meant the organization itself, rather than his dad.

Actually, the first Bush had an assassination attempt, but it was while in Kuwait, and launched by some suicide bombers.
Clinton had two assassination attempts against him. The first was Frank Eugene Corder who stole a Cessna on September 11, 1994 and flew it in the south lawn of the White House grounds. He didn't have very good aim. Especially since the Clintons were nowhere near the White House at the time.
On October 29, 1994, Francisco Martin Duran fired 29 shots with an assault rifle into a group of men in suits on the lawn at the White House. He thought one of them was Bill Clinton.

Robert Pickett fired shots in the general direction of the White House in February, 2001. They couldn't prove W. was the actual target though.

While in Georgia (the country) Vladimir Arutyunian threw a live grenade at the stage where W. was speaking.

Hopefully none of the idiots will succeed. I do think their lifestyles will have to change a bit for safety's sake. They do have such great security though that they might not have to change too, too much.

Enough rambling for now,
Gene

I've always thought it's just a matter of when and not if there will be a serious attempt on his life and not necessarily by the rednecks that people think it will be. Anyone that wants to cause utter chaos in the US could be responsible as it would tear the country apart.

Just as an aside for Janet, I did a search and there are supposedly 16,813 people registered in the USA with the first name Adlolph and 1,528 with the first name Adolf. There are 520 people with the surname Adolf and 1,834 with the surname Adolph. The name does not have the same stigma attached in many Latin American countries and remains a reasonably popular name.

Good post. I think security these days is much better than it used to be. And if nobody was driven enough to whack George W., then perhaps Barack's chances of survival are pretty good.

The assassination attempts seem to have been half-hearted and poorly thought out. Never-the-less, the security services seem to like to congratulate themselves for corralling a bunch of disorganised lunatics, while conveniently forgetting that they failed to see four planes getting hijacked and three flying into buildings.

Also, it seems that men of peace with the name John are great targets for assassination: John F Kennedy, John Paul II and John Lennon come to mind.

Certifiable maniacs like Bush seem to be immune to other certifiable maniacs.

Bush a couple of days later. The Hinckleys were family friends of the Bushes. A coincidence, or a manipulation of the incestuous world of Yalies. (Yale U. and Skull and Bones).
