One Small Step for Man - or - One Giant Leap for Hollywood?
July 8th 2007 04:54
I can remember as a kid sitting in front of an old HMV television in the early hours of the morning watching a grainy black and white image of Neil Armstrong clambering down the steps of the Apollo 11 Lunar Module and stepping out onto the surface of the Moon.
I remember my parents being awe-struck and constantly reminding me that this very moment was an event I would be able to recount to my kids and their kids after that.
A man was walking on the moon, and I was watching it happen, live, on the TV.
Today of course (just as Elvis still walks the planet) the conspiracies abound.
But have we collectively be duped?
Did NASA land men on the Moon?
Could it have been faked?
Let’s look at a couple of the theories.
1) There are many photographs of US flags on the Moon. In many shots, the flags appear to be waving. But there is no atmosphere on the Moon, so there is no breeze for a flag to flutter in.
2) Where are the stars?
Conspiracy theorists argue that you ought to be able to see stars from the Moon. Yet there are no stars in any of the Apollo photographs
3) Shadows on the surface
Look carefully at the shadows in the Apollo photographs. Hoax believers point out that, when you have a single light source, very far away, (as the Sun appears on the Moon), shadows should all be parallel. They claim that shadows pointing in different directions are evidence of nearby or multiple light sources - as you would get in a film studio.
OK – so there’s a gadzillion more – and who knows – perhaps we have been duped.
But you know – I like to think that that 'One Small Step for Man was in fact a Giant Leap for Mankind'.
