The Green Dream . . . .
August 4th 2008 21:17
Yesterday we were forced by fate to have a family member of five years ‘put to sleep’.
Having led somewhat of a wretched life before being adopted into the Nice Guy household – this six-year-old golden Labrador finally found a place where she could eat, sleep and play to her hearts’ content – much to the angst of her older and sometimes less enthusiastic male partner.
Rambunctious, energetic and sometimes downright mischievious, she was a never-the-less a vital cog in the Nice Guy household – a four-legged legacy to fun and spontaneity – one that wasn’t always understood – but one that was no doubt making up for lost time given her early life.
Best described as ‘Mad as a March Hare’, she was none-the-less loyal, a staunch guardian with a gentle heart with what can only be described as an overly exuberant and loving nature.
However, yesterday (having once before beaten what had been categorised as merely a cyst) the diagnosis wasn’t good.
Having been off her food for days – the family vet prepared us for what almost seemed inevitable in her own eyes – that there was a pasture somewhere in need of her vivacity – and it was time we let her go.
The calling was quick – less than a week from being as ‘silly as a cut snake’ to trying her best to keep up a brave front in the face of what surely was an rampaging tumour which knew no compassion.
When the phone call finally came – and the verdict delivered – she was already fast asleep on the operating table – no doubt simply waiting only for the length of her dream to be extended by what veterinarians label 'the green dream' - in essence a over prefusion of administered anesthetic.
To say making that final decision is never easy is to be too colloquial.
But sometimes - you just know when it’s the right time.
In her own way she told me.
We will miss her.

So sorry to hear about your loss. I so dread the day that happens with our rat terriers or cats. I guess the only way to handle it is to know there was something wrong enough to make her miserable, and that she is now in a better place. Just keep in mind she will always be with you in your memories. You should share some pictures if you can get them onto the computer.

It's the hardest decision ever and the day we dread.
She's up there in the stars. Take care and give yourself lots of time. R.

Thanks champ.
The kids were obviously a little distressed last night and coping with it in their own way.
The most affected at present is the male labrador - who is constantly looking for his mate and was pining this morning with the occassional howl.
Cheers

Thank you.
A bit new age senstive I guess - but you're right - it's never easy - particularly when something or someone relies on you to make the decisions for them on a daily basis.
Then to play God in essence is a tough role - despite the fact you think you know what's best given all the information.
It's all in the eyes - they tell you what you really need to know - but probably don't want to hear.

losing a pet is just so sad, but when they are sick and in pain you have to do the right thing for them . . . they become so much like people once they have been with the family for awhile, its very hard to say goodbye

She had a way about her - and mischief was sometimes her middle name - but in life it's so often the case that those who choose to wear the brightest colours are the ones you remember - not necessarily those who wear biege.
Thank you for your sentiments

What pains us even more at the moment is the fact her partner in crime - is still looking for her - and we just can't explain this to the old fella.
Thanks

It's the coming home and expecting a bundle of energy whose both excited and out and out silly about it that gets you.
There's a sombre mood right now - but the world still revolves and brighter days are just around the corner I'm sure.
Thanks for caring

Please hug the MNG clan for me. I am so sorry for your loss. Pets are our "life witnesses": Not only do our animals provide us with their uninhibited emotional expression, but they also allow us to express parts of ourselves that we may never let other humans see. I am so sorry that you guys had to make such a difficult decision.
