Political Correctness - We've Gone Mad!

June 28th 2010 00:36
Political Correctness
Have we gone mad?
It was with a mix of 'what the . . .' combined with exasperation that I read this morning about a group of 'puritans' outraged by the classification given to the remake of the 1984 film The Karate Kid.

Citing that it believes the martial arts in it is too violet and that is should not be seen by youngsters because if featured an adult instructor urging children to be violent to other children - I almost choked on my wheeties as I reached that point where I knew we had finally gone mad.

The group, calling itself (The Australian Council on Children and the Media) and headed by someone by the name of Elizabeth Handsley, was taking a hardline stand, advising parents against taking children under the age of 12 to see it.

Starring Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith (the son of actor Will Smith), the group has gone as far as suggesting that the movie should have an M rating (not recommended for those under 15 years).

They've even enlisted some child pyschologist 'puppet' who is quoted as saying that while the hero of the new film was very young looking, the violence in the film was quite brutal and adult in type.

He said there was also the possibility that young viewers could be inspired to copy such voilence because it did not show the consequences of such behaviour.

"The violence does not show the real-life outcomes of serious kicking and punching. A young audience may not appreciate what willsurely be the result if they copy that violence."

Pllllleeeeeasse!

Not only has this group done a huge favour to the movie - ensuring kids will now most definitely go and pay their hard earned to check it out - but how much longer will these social puritans continue to think they are responsible for the moral crusade of the masses?

Afterall, similar incarnations warned us against novels such as To Kill A Mockingbird and Wuthering Heights, wanted to ban Noddy and Big Ears from children's libraries, climbed upon their soapboxes with protests and album burning when the birth of rock and roll emerged, screamed that Elvis and his suggestive dance routines would be the ruin of all civilised teens and that the Beatles were down right evil.

Are these group's for real?

Don't they have anything substantial to exert their energies on?

I'm sorry - there's a line in the sand when it comes to being vigilent and being downright ridiculous - and this group's crossed it - again.

They are off their bloody rockers MNG.

The film is sensational and I am taking my 8yr old neighbour's kid to see it next week. My concern was that the Jayden Smith was too young for the part but I preferred the film to the originals and found Smith amazing in it. He justifies his performance ten fold for his age.

These idiots need to wake up and smell the roses. The violence that is happening in schools the world over makes this look like play school and the film shows things like discipline, standing up for what you believe in and if you have problems sort them out in an official capacity as opposed to beating each other up on the streets. Besides it is a good versus bad story - one that has been around for years. The bond between tutor and student is exceptional and wow should it be banned now because the bond is too good? Perhaps the tutor may be a peddo. Should Free Will now be banned because it shows a kid making a prison escape for a whale, holy crap - kids will now be breaking people out of jail or breaking into the zoo at night to release the wildlife. Haha

My review for Karate Kids is here if you want a read.

Jason

A voice of reason and sensibility. Seriously what is this group's social agenda.

What next?

The banning of Wylie Coyote scooting down the highway after the Road Runner holding a knife and fork because it will incite kids to run with eating implements down the M2?

Humph . . .

Exactly - and we should all be brainwashed "A Clockwork Orange" style as we need 20yrs of The Simpsons removed from our minds because we are all going to turn into Homer and destroy the planet via a nuclear reactor explosion.

Hi MNG,

the martial arts in it is too violet

Hang those puritans and their prejudice against purple! *Shakes fist*

Seriously though, you're right, 'tis ridiculous. Gaurding children so closely against these fictitious things doesn't necessarily make them more attuned to reality...

I grew up with a lot of core values, but also choice and experience, I wasn't wrapped in cotton wool at all. And I am a balanced person (apart from all the stealing I do - I blame Robin Hood for that, made it so very cool).

Oops! No doubt purple with rage.

As for Robin Hood - I suspect your motives are pure and that your only stealing from the rich to give to the poor.
