Gen Y's - take note!

The 'Diva' isn't an invention of the 'noughties'.

For those of us who can remember I would cite the following roll call and invite you to add to what I'm sure would be an impressive line-up.

Let's kick things off with Chaka Khan - probably most noted the liberated classic. . . "I'm Every Woman"


How about Thelma Houston who implored us - "Don‘t leave me this way".

Or Irene Cara, early Madonna, Laura Branigan, Cyndi Lauper, Bonnie Tyler or the Disco diva herself - Donna Summer?

Yes folks - today's diva's did have mothers and grandmothers - sisters in arms - who paved the way for today's Lady Ga Ga's, Pinks and Sheryl Crows.

See, I hear the word `diva' and I think Maria Callas or some other `difficult' opera singer! Im `only' 31, so its got to be something to do with upbringing.

I'm not so sure some of the names you mentioned would classify "diva" ... Laura Brannigan? Gloria was huge, Self Control was kinda big .. but that was it ... Surely a diva is someone who welds a power for a while? Madonna definitely, Whitney for awhile, Beyonce certainly
