Public or Private School Education?
August 27th 2007 01:46
The battle rages – well at least it did this week – as I ducked the cross-fire of virtuous salvos in the state vs private education foray.
Doing my best to dodge barbed comments and heated debate – eventually I found myself the inenviable victim of the dreaded – ‘so what’s your postion’ on the matter probe.
Is there one set of education rules for the rich and one for those who simply don’t have the ‘coin’ to put their kids through private school tutorage?
In the red corner – the Private School debate and evergreen ‘does the end result justify the investment argument’.
In the blue corner – the Public (or State) school debate and the ‘ you're just another brick in the wall’ conjecture.
Stand up for what you believe in – roll with the punches and remember no hitting below the belt!
Hmmm - perhaps we should all go back to the drawing board.

I am the product of a public school, and if I had the chance again I would probably still go to a public school.
There were plenty of kids at my school whose parents could have easily afforded to send them to a private one, yet didn't because they thought they would get the same (if not better) education at a state school. Likewise, there were people I knew going to private schools whose parents were working crappy extra jobs and struggling just so they could afford to send them there. So while in some cases it is about the 'coin,' in many others it is about perception.
I think parents should look at the individual schools in their area, rather than just whether it is private or public. There are good and bad ones in both camps.

It was certainly a hot topic of discussion around the BBQ table - and I mean hot. Your sense of maturity and an even keel on the subject would've been greatly appreciated on the day.
Thanks for stopping by.

Private vs public? Single sex vs co-ed? I have to tell you, as a parent, it is too much to think about sometimes.
Especially since I should have chosen schools before I was married.
Love & stuff

You're right. And every child is different. Of course what I didn't bring up was the home schooling arguement - but then again . . .
