I'm All Ears

September 16th 2008 02:41
Ears
I'm All Ears
Lend Me Your Ears . . . well your id-ears (ideas - sorry bad pun) at least.

As regular Orblers would be aware - I have the pleasure of hosting a community radio program on the FM band each week between 7 and 10 playing mostly 70s, 80's and new stuff - which to my surprise is actually attracting increased audience share - well around 20,000 at present - which I'm really quite chuffed about.

Now, long and short of it is - I'd like a few ideas about subject matter.

To date - been pretty happy with snippets such as 'Weird News From Around the World", This Day in Music yaddah yaddah - but would relish something a little new - something which would get people talking.

Sure I could have SL Bradish or Damo on the prog - but censorship laws would have me off the air quicker than I could say *%!# . . .

In fact - one Orbler (who unless they choose to reveal themselves) already has an active input into the show each week - which is going over a treat with listeners.

So - lend me your . . . err ideas . . .

Hi MNG,

Well it isn't a surprise to me that the first thing that enters my head is trivia. lol I could even write a bunch of questions for you to use.

I am sure I will have more ideas once I think about it more.

Cheers Gene

I suspect your catelogued knowledge would far surpass the sometimes cavernous and enquiring minds of even the most ardent of my listeners . . .

Mind you - we could have The Oracle segment . . .

Nice!

pick me, pick me!
i wont swear!

you knpow what they used to do on Triple J (they might still do it) they got listeners to phone or email or post in 3 songs that had a common theme, so if it was "cheating on your partner" it might be:

The Offspring - Spare Me The Details
Alanis Moriset - You Oughta Know
Eamon - Fuck It (I Don't Want You Back)

You could've said - Squeeze - “Tempted”, Naughty By Nature - “O.P.P.”, John Lennon - “Jealous Guy”
or Fleetwood Mac - “Everybody Finds Out” but no Earmon's good choice

Stay well - now I know you play in puddles

Oh on the contrary - you'd certainly put 'bums on seats' - the station would lose its licence - but boy it would be a great ride while it lasted.

Cheers

I am fresh out of ears today, ill come back if i can think of anything good, not much entertaining in CLimate world, except of course the passionate debates between believers and non-believers, but you might run into the swearing problem there too......

SOME OF MY EYE DEARS......

1:
DUMB CROOK OF THE WEEK:
short, pithy and witty recount of stupid criminal exploits from around the world(both staton researched and listener contributions, maybe best of the month gets a small prize, or of the week, a specially dedicated song for them, or whomever they nominate.

2:
GOOD SAMARITAN OF THE WEEK:
those that do good deeds, people ring in with news of their own 'hero' of the week.

3:
REVENGE INC:
listener ideas on getting revenge, in a humorous way of course!

4:
POLITICAL PUMMELING OF THE WEEK:
exerts of Hansard, so read out by you, or audio playback of best slanging match or put down in Parliament that week.

Need any more, let me know...

cheers

do the secret sound! its corny but listeners will be drawn into the guessing game before they have time to whinge about it.

A bit of a twist on Morgan's idea way up there. When I used to live in New Jersey I listened to a radio station called K-Rock (It is where Howard Stern got his big break on FM which led to the syndication all over) Anyway, during their "Electric Lunch Hour" they had a contest where they would play three songs that had something in common. Listeners called in and first to get it correct got a small prize.

An example might be:

American Pie
We Didn't Start the Fire
Vogue

I won't give you the answer yet lol

As I mentioned one Orbler already has an active role on the program - which really adds something to the show - and already is getting a bit of a following after just 3 or 4 weeks . . . perhaps I should get a few more of you guys involved.

I love the revenge concept . . .

Probably should be careful when I walk out into the carpark afterwards though . . . huh?

An oldie . . . but a goodie - could be worth a little more thinking time.

BTW - 89.9FM

Hey Gene

Yeah - one guy is doing that on another station here occassionally - he's fairly cyptic though - which is what makes if fun - but frustrating I guess - because there can be so many 'sorta-kinda' answers which fit.

As for your question - sorry - best I can come up with is that they all poke reference to Marilyn Monroe - Vogue and We Didn't Start the Fire (directly) and by inference (Miss American Pie).

. . . . best fill me in buddy.

Very close..

My thinking was just that they all sing about real-life famous people.
We Didn't Start the Fire mentioned about 50 of them, Vogue about 15 or 20, and American Pie of course about Holly, Valens, and The Big Bopper.

Which is as you say the biggest problem with the concept. In some cases it is open for interpretation.
