Reality TV - How Far is Too Far?

June 11th 2009 22:35
Reality TV
I am so over reality TV!

What started as Is light-hearted entertainment is now a scurge on society.

The invasion of reality TV through programs such as Survivor and Big Brother have proved to be big winners for the networks - so what's why stop there?

Reality TV,is afterall a cheap alternative to other programming with no scriptwriter is required, nor paid actors or complex sets, and they can rake in the ratings - compare this with the millions per episode required to produce a sitcom such as Friends.

TV executives are constantly on the lookout for new reality formats to grab their share of the audience - but how far will they go?

How weird, treacherous or degrading will reality programs become in a bid to maximise ratings?

To what levels of privacy invasion will they stoop for the sake of ratings.

Would you be a part of reali-life TV?

And how far would you go?

The only reality-show I could ever see myself doing is The Amazing Race because you actually learn to do interesting stuff and see new places. Other than that, reality-tv is not for me.

I never understood all the hoopla about Survivor and Big Brother. I used to watch The Real World back when MTV actually stood for Music Television but quickly found it boring. Now, I only follow TAR and Wipeout. But I have to wonder does Wipeout count as reality-tv or is it simply a game-show like Who Wants To Be Millionaire?

Hi Ann2

So You Think You can Dance, Cook, Sing . . .

So you want to be an Apprentice, Millionaire, Supermodel?

Life on the beat as a cop, doctor a nanny . . .

Where will the voyeruism end?

I say to hell with it, let's recreate Battle Royale. In order to rake in extra ratings, we'll call it The Real Survivor. Do it with civilians, do it with criminals, who cares. Last one standing gets $50,000 and a free stay in an intensive care ward.

I hang my head in shame as I admit that I am one of those cretins who kinda loves reality TV. I know! I'm a smart girl, right? Why does it fascinate me so?

I would never be able to be on a show where they follow you around in your daily life like the Real World...I'm just too embarassing of a person. However, I have often been told that my day to day life would make a great reality show. I don't doubt it, given my insane misadventures, but I draw the line at being followed by cameras.

I wouldn't mind being the next American Idol, though.

Now there's some outside the square thinking . . . not sure who'd sign up for it though

So closely aligned sometimes aren't they - public ridicule (ie: Beauty and the Geek) verges on either cringe or comedy in both its concept and delivery. . . ouch

You know - the next one we hear about (perhaps it's already been aired) is - so you want to be a stand-up comic . . . now there's gotta be money in that for the networks.

Cheers

Sorry MNG, it's been done here in the States. It's called Last Comic Standing - reality competition for standup comics.

I could never do it anyway. I like to joke around with my buddies...but I think if I tried to be funny behind a mic I'd just sound like "Uh, so I just flew in from North Dakota, and boy my arms are tired! Hello, is this thing on? But seriously, folks...."

Well, as far as I know they haven't done a real life 'Truman Show' yet. That would be going too far. I think they're going to keep looking for new reality TV shows to do as long as people keep watching them. And they're probably going to go as far with them as what they think the public will accept.

Master Chef is pretty good, and i really enjoy Project Runway

all of the dating ones are so scripted and heavily edited, very unrealistic for "reality" tv

i think The Biggest Loser is quite effective in inspiring people to lose weight

I nearly got on the Colony - went through a couple of rounds of interviews. It was a great idea - a group of people had to live for 3 months like they were in the early 1800's.
I have to admit I absolutely dig Dance, Idol, and my latest fave is Masterchef.
I enjoyed Big Brither - it was like watching a train crash
Never watched Survivor and those US celebrities just making their own where they get followed around and have run ins with familiy and other celebs is just totally shite.
Oh - and same with Morgan - Biggest Loser is effective and I enjoy it.
I really want them to make one with Prisoners - where they are thrown on an Island and have to survive bobbie traps and snipers - then bring on one like that Arnold movie - crap - what was it called??

yeah i have a friend who started a diet the same week as the Biggest Loser season started and she used the program to keep the pace and keep inspired with her own weight loss

as for the Arnie movie im not sure if you are talking about The Running Man, or Predator? was Arnie a prisoner?

Granted there are a few which offer up some interesting viewing - but to be honest - Biggest Loser - does a couple of very wrong things.

Public ridicule (which sure - the contestants put themselves up for) - but also extraordinary tactics to acheive rapid weight loss - which are neither sustainable or healthy in the long term.

Balanced diet - my foot. Sensible exercise regime - hogwash!

Prime ratings winner and money spinner for the networks when Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig et al screen their ads - priceless.

Stay well

Colony? That's a new one on me - but given my avoidance tactics - there would be a few no doubt.

A reality show with prisioners - hmmm - Natalina - tell me there's already one in the wind in the US . . .

Cheers champ

I don't for a minute not advocate a healthy lifestyle, exercise and good nutrition - and if the program gives that to people - great - they just need to be very wary of the messages that can be misrepresented through 30mins or an hour of edited television.

I easily get wrapped up in Biggest Loser, and yes...it makes me cry. BUT, MNG you are right that they do ridicule the contestants...the worst part is that in the beginning when they are all very heavy, the men have to take off their shirts during weigh ins and women are forced to wear these little tummy exposing tops...like it's some kind of freak show. But...strangely, after they lose weight, and probably want to show off their bodies, then the men get to keep their shirts on and women are given new shirts that cover their guts. Kinda sick.

women are forced to wear these little tummy exposing tops.

oh Nat, i hate that too, it makes me cringe, it seems so unnecessary, they could wear something skin tight or fitted without exposing all that skin, im sure in their normal lives they would be incredibly self-conscious out stretch-marks and cellulite etc

extraordinary tactics to acheive rapid weight loss

MNG, i know what you mean, as someone with a permanent back injury, i cannot believe the trainers get people to haul tractor tyres over one shoulder while running up a hill of sand . . . wheres the OH&S officer on set? *shudder*

That 'I'm a Celebrity, Get me out of here' is the stupidest show I have ever seen. I admit to watching Survivor, Big Brother, The Amazing Race and The Biggest Loser, but most of the ones I have heard of are so totally 'out there' that I don't even give them a glance. Got stuck watching I'm a Celebrity one night with a friend and vowed to give them all up. Who are those people?
