Big Screen Love Stories
February 13th 2011 23:25
Truly great love stories don't come around very often in the movies - pairings that work not only via the script but which transend the rehearshed and with whom the audience can sense a real affinity between the characters.
Naturally - being Valentine's Day, the commercial TV stations are screening the usual fare of romance complete with every conceivable ad for diamonds and jewellery, chocolates, florists and the inevitable phone service provider who will put you touch with your loved ones . . .
But I digress.
The reason I bring this to your attention is that here, at least - Sleepless in Seattle gets its umpteenth screening on the 'box' tonight.
Without doubt a favourite among viewers - it's real triumph is that it can both frustrate yet evoke the warm and fuzzy's particularly given the two characters live happily ever after when they spend practically the entire movie apart?
OK - so in my books the pairing of Hanks and Ryan works a treat in this instance - but does it in yours?
Then there's Casablanca.
OK, it's an obvious one, but it has to be on here. Not just a great love story but one of the greatest movies ever.
But what of the multitude of others?
The Notebook? Dirty Dancing? Notting Hill? Pretty Woman? Gone With The Wind? Love Story? 50 First Dates? While You Were Sleeping? When Harry Met Sally? West Side Story?
What works for you?
