Lying! When Is It Okay?
January 3rd 2009 20:23
"I lie every second of the day. My whole life is a sham."
Or so said George Costanza from Seinfeld
"Lying we are told from an early age is a no no, but is it sometimes better to fib then to reveal the truth and hurt people's feelings.
After all we lie to our kids from the time they are born about everything from Santa Claus to ‘if the wind changes you’ll stay like that’.
Is it okay to lie when you can't remember the truth?
Then there’s those ‘innocent’, everyday lies that people tell to avoid conflict or hurting someone's feelings
You lie, buy a little time.
You lie on your resume.
You justify all of these things to yourself – but when is it okay to ‘bend the rules’ and when isn't it?

I think you would be saying the right thing if you answered "no" to my question "does my arse look big in this?" And you would probably want to "bend the truth" if I asked you how old I looked.
They are probably lies that have the purpose in making me feel better (or saving your skin).
Of course, Santa Clause and all those things that keep kids happy and excited.
Not OK Lies
Lies that are just plain lies are ones like:
The cheque's in the mail or practically anything in the business world even though it seems to be totally accepted in that culture is wrong, wrong, wrong.
Lies that have no purpose, they are just lies - and you can't trust people who lie, right?
PS Here is an interesting article on lies in advertising, PR and the corporate world you might find interestng.

A wise man once told me - that when presented the the question "does my arse look big in this?" - the correct response is "not big enough!"
Thanks - interesting article too.
