TV's Greatest Sidekicks?
April 27th 2010 22:19
The Lone Ranger had Tonto. Andy Griffith had Don Knots (aka Barney Fife). Batman had Robin and Frasier Crane had brother Niles - so what do they all have in common?
They're all TV sidekicks!
From old-school Ethel Mertz who acted as Lucille Ball's sidekick in I Love Lucy through to Sam Malone's partner in crime Carla Tortelli in Cheers and Willow and Xander who acted as sidekicks to Buffy Summers - television is littered with famous 'other halves' who managed to burden the sidekick load - generally with little fanfare - and doubtless a smaller pay cheque.
After all who does a star or hero turn to for support?
How does a tough as nails cop lighten up a little?
Who do fan fiction writers pair up with their main characters to create some truly disturbing story lines?
How do you create a successful cartoon duo?
The answer to all these questions is create a sidekick.
Often without sidekicks, lead characters would simply have nobody to talk to.
But who are the most memorable or indeed your favourites?
