Who would win in a superhero showdown?

August 19th 2010 21:47
Superhero, Superman, Icon, Comics, TV, Pop Culture
Everyone has their favourite superhero be it Batman, Captain America, The Incredible Hulk, even Underdog - but who would come out on top in a head to head contest between the lot?

Would Iron Man wear the prestigious crown or The Green Lantern?

Would Superman triumph over Spiderman?

Who would be the last two standing in the superhero stakes and battle it out for the ultimate crown?

Superman hands down - no competition - as long as kryptonite is kept out of the equation

Depends on the criteria. Are we talking about sheer strength? Or are we talking about popularity?
Superman supposedly is the strongest, although I always liked to think The Incredible Hulk would pin Superman to the ground in a wrestle.
As far as popularity goes, well Batman would probably win in the current pop-culture climate, thanks to Christopher Nolan, perhaps Spider-Man might have a few years ago, thanks to Sam Raimi.
Back in the late 70s Superman ruled the roost (thanks to Christopher Reeve). And in many comic book fan's eyes, the Man of Steel is still the all-time greatest.
My favourite was Man-Wolf (Jon Jameson, son of Jonah Jameson, Clark Kent's boss), who was more of an anti-hero due to his berserk lupine behaviour.

We'd have to go back a few years, but the winner would be the original Captain Marvel. The Big Red Cheese lacked some of Superman's powers (heat vision, ventriloquism) but he was totally invulnerable, unlike Supes who can be hurt by kryptonite and magic. Cap's weakness was that if he turned back into Billy Batson he was just human - but as Captain Marvel he couldn't be hurt. Also, in the 1940s he outsold Superman and was published twice a month.

For runner up I would bet on The Spectre -- but he seems to be so powerful that he's just dull.

Looking at more the garden variety cage wrestling superhero. In which case who would be your last two men/beasts standing?

Too difficult to answer, as I'm not a superhero geek, and I don't know enough of them.

I don't know much about superheros but I believe Storm from X-Men could kick ass. I mean if you piss her off she could just create a storm. I don't know how many superheros could beat that?

If they couldn't bring the other's weakness, Superman and Thor would be the last two standing.
