Superstitious – Read On!
August 22nd 2007 00:55
Anally retentive foibles aside – generally speaking I think most people have at least one superstition lurking in their closet.
Whether it’s refusing to walk under a ladder, refusing to walk on cracks on the pavement or taking care not to spill salt – there are superstitions and then there are the superstitious.
Beware of Friday the Thirteenth, Black cats are evil, the breaking of a mirror – they’re all there – for general consumption and readily admissible in the court of public perception.
The superstitious of course can make ordinary seem downright – exorcisism (now there’s an adjectival verb).
From sportspeople who wear the same jersey number each week and refuse to indulge in almost ritualistic behaviors to family spiritualisms and some of the ‘old wives tales’ that have been handed down through the generations.
At this point – I need to declare a pecuniary interest as far as the whole genealogy ‘thang’ goes – with a few somewhat curious – but steadfastly adhered to mythologies.
Firstly – never open an umbrella inside a room.
Secondly – never place new shoes on a table.
Next – always (when buying a wallet or purse as a gift) include a silver coin.
Fourthly – never sing before breakfast (you’ll cry before the day is done).
And finally – never have wattle or opals in the house.
So, I guess that places me well and truly inside the circle – despite my candor - or in the words of Stevie Wonder – I guess that makes me – Very Superstitious.

Is belief in extra terrestrials a superstition? If so - Guilty.
As far as the whole bad luck/good fortune side, can't say Im a believer...but not walking under a ladder has always seemed like common sense to me, not a theory.

I have never been superstitious. I believe that we make our own luck and create our own reality. Wow I sound a little stodgy!
