Top Five Teen Actors of All Time

June 4th 2009 22:35
James Dean
Who have been the best teen actors of all time?

This subject came up in conversation last night and we roughly formulated our top five – which of course is open for not only discussion but dissection.

So in no particular order our list went something like

James Dean
Heath Ledger

Drew Barrymore
Natlie Wood
Molly Ringwald

But who would you nominate?

Lindsay Lohan? Daniel Radcliffe? Ron Howard?

Would love to hear yours!

i know he was in his 20s playing a teenaged but i really liked Christian Slater back in the days of Heathers, Robin Hood, Kuffs, and Untamed Heart etc

i remember Edward Furlong and Jonathan Brandis were quite popular when i was younger

as for the girls i would have to go for the powerhouse trilogy of Evan Rachel Wood, Dominique Swain, and Jena Malone . . . i think they all look kind of similar

Scarlette Johansson was a teen actor in The Horse Whisperer, and Kristen Stewart (of recent Twilight fame) was a teen actor in Panic Room

I'd throw in Jodie Foster and I definitely agree with River Phoenix. How old was Noah Taylor when he was doing stuff like 'The Year My Voice Broke'? I'd add him and Ben Mendelson. Maybe Nadine Garner?

River Phoenix would've been my first choice.

Dakota Fanning also seems to be holding her own quite well in some of her latest releases.

My vote is dead center in the picture you used--Anthony Michael Hall. He was, is, and always will be my favorite teenage geek.

You know, River Phoenix didn't even rate a mention the other night - which is probably a grave oversight . . .
opps - did I just say that!

You certainly work outside the square when it comes to this list - all worthy contenders though . . .

Stay well

Jodie Foster has been around for how many years now? Wow I remember her in Bugsy Malone back in . . . hmm around 1977 or something - gosh hasn't she been around the block (in the nicest way of course) a few times.

A real stayer.

I can't believe the support for River Phoenix . . . he certainly had something - pity we never got to see just how far that talent would've gone.

And how under-rated was he?

Cheers champion

I'm also part of team Phoenix, one of the best actors of his generation. I also think Dakota Fanning has always shown wisdom and acting skills beyond her age and she only gets better the older she gets.

I also think Anna Paquin was fantastic as a teen and I also love her work as an adult.

I must be out of step with the rest of the world - or perhaps I simply march to a different beat

I also think Jodie Foster is definitely up there in the top five.

As a bit of a Judy Garland fan, I have to give her a vote. Not just for her acting ability. But for the difficulties she must have faced during her teenage years - being forced to play child roles, being given heaps of pills, having an overbearing mother, etc. etc. To feel sorry for someone is probably not the best reason to vote for them. But she was a great actress and an absolutely brilliant singer as well.

Nice get with Judy Garland. Was she ever a teen actress? I know she was well into her 20's when Wizard of Oz was done. But you're right - she had a wretched career and upbringing.

MNG,

I like your list, esp. Drew Barrymore and Heath.

I would also add the current Twilight actors Kirsten Stewart and Robert Pattison.

I cannot overlook Zac Effron either from High School Musical.

Hi MNG,

Actually Judy Garland was about 17 when she did Wizard of Oz. But that was pretty old for the role, because Dorothy was meant to be a lot younger than that. She also had all those Andy Hardy movies and other movies with Mickey Rooney at around the same time. I think, from memory, the first of those was about '36, which would have made her about 14.

Thanks.

Zac certainly does have a following doesn't he. Surprised no one has really included Daniel Radcliffe or a few of the 'oldies' like Micky Rooney though.

Good pick-up. In hindsight I think you're pretty much on the money there with Judy Garland. Stella career - but so tormented . . .

I am astounded - hello - LEONARDO DICAPRIO!!!

Nominated for an academy award for his first film and nothing but strength after strength since then.

And what about Dakota Fanning - she seems top live on a set.

My list in order would be.

1) Leo
2) River
3) Daniel Radcliffe - he IS Harry Potter
4) Christian Slater
5) Winona Ryder

You bad bad people - I take it personally you ignored Leo - Hahahaha

Being a 'Potter' fan, I'd have to say Daniel Radcliffe. ...and I agree with Jason, Leonardo DiCaprio -- though I'm not a fan, I do think he has become a really good actor (and will get better...).

Hi MNG,

Just to quibble James Dean wasn't a teenaged actor, he just played them sometimes.

For me the best are:

Sean Penn
Jodie Foster
Joseph Gordon Levitt
River Phoenix
Evan Rachel Wood

You're right of course. Other than a couple of walk on parts and one or two Pepsi ads - I guess he really didn't set the world alight until his 20's.

Nice mix of acting talent you've thrown in there.

Has fame found you yet?

Or is it just around the corner?

Hey MNG,

Got to agree with Morgan, Cheryl, Jason and co with Jodie Foster, Anna Paquin and Leo in Gibert Grape. Also Keisha Castle-Hughes from Whale Rider.

I knew JD would be straight in there to rectify the James Dean was never a teenage actor. LOL He did Pepsi ads???

For overall consistency whilst in their teens:
Leonardo DiCaprio
Jodie Foster

And for single performances:
Oksana Akinshina in Lilya 4-Eva
Lina Leandersson in Let the Right One In
Aleksei Kravochenko in Come and See
Goergia Groome in London to Brighton
