Life’s Lyrical Time Machine – which song holds your favourite memories.

Pop music – despite claims to the contrary by some - isn't - disposable!
'A great tune is like a photo album', a friend of mine said once – 'where you can be transported back not only to a time and place but also to revisit feelings and emotions'.
Ya know, for some reason I dusted off my copy of ELO's Discovery album just the other day – and instantly – it was 1979.
Caught in a vortex Jules Vern would be proud of – I escaped the worries of the world and for the next hour or so proceeded to immerse myself in that wonderful watercolour of recollections we keep for just such occasions.
Devoid of any interruptions – I reached for another album, then another – blissfully aware that I had become psychologically addicted to a prescriptive emotional rollercoaster.
Like a surfer thundering down the face of a pristine crystal faced ‘tube’ – I realized the wave of sentimentality I was riding couldn’t last forever – but for now at least – I was on the beach.
Recoiling to the strains of the Eagles - Heartache Tonight and Supertramp's - Breakfast in America – there I was – 16 again, with my first serious girlfriend on one arm and bravado on the other.
The sun was shining, the world was younger and life was good.
. . . then it happened.
'Daaadddd – we’re home . . .'
The ride was over . . . . for now.
It may be a sad indictment on life (or perhaps just mine) that occasionally these lyrical crusades are, medicinally at least - the emotional cleansers we need to push through the sludge that can be modern day living.
Then again – if not to make the most of the future - all our emotional baggage (the good and the not-so-good) have to be brought on board – and if one (just one) song or tune helps pave the way – then I say 'phewwy' to those purists who propagate the view that pop music is idle trash.
If a better today for you means sometimes borrowing on the credit you've stored from yesterday then there'll always be something to look forward to tomorrow.
