Things My Father Has Taught Me
August 31st 2007 01:06
With Father’s Day just around the corner – the thought dwelled on me of the life lessons and skills my father has passed on to me.
Generational as some may be (ie: polite speak in mixed company, gentlemanly accordance and loyalty), there are a few gems which – while sometimes taken for granted – are hallmarks of a father handing down everyday wisdoms.
“Nothing is free in this world” is a favourite – and has served me well.
Practicing for hours and learning to tie a Windsor knot to afford a more coiffured and tailored look in the right environment is also something which while small – has earnt the occasional brown nosing point or two over the years.
How to body surf and catch a wave, how to rust proof a car, how to cast a fishing rod, tie those excruciatingly frustrating hook knots and how to judge the tides.
That good manners never go out of style and that ‘having a go’ and giving your best is the most anyone can ask.
Yep – if that was all my dad passed down to me – then you’d say I was pretty lucky to have such an oracle – to have him still here to share this (and other wisdoms) - with not only me but my children as well is something I continue to savour.
To all dad's out there (and the mum's who for whatever reason have to play dad too) thankyou and Happy Father's Day.

Yep, Dad's rock. Well, mine does anyway.
Dad also taught me to change a tire on my car (though the only time I've ever had a flat he still came round to me house and changed the tyre for me - even though I was an RACV member and could have called them to do it......he's a good man!).
One of my favourite things that Dad has always told both myself and my sister, whenever we say that some guy is 'just a friend'.
"He's a bloke. And blokes don't want to just be friends with girls."
hehehehe

Men and dads are not entirely separate entities - but I suspect (going back to my Sunday School days) that the three wise men were in fact fathers.
Stay well

Do unto others as you hope they do to you
Don't believe what you read, see and hear, always ask questions.
The majority is always wrong
people are followers so make sure you grab a few for yourself.
Enjoy every day and teh rest will fall into place.

1. Can't fix stupid
2. Never speak ill of anyone
3. don't do the same thing over and over and expect a different result.
4. 30% of folks love you no matter what you do, 30% of folks hate you no matter what you do%, 30% of folks don't give a shit, and it is the last 10% of undecided that make the difference

Can't fix stupid - love it. Mind if I use this in everyday conversation?
Very Forest Gump - stupid is as stupid does.
