Today I was on Breakfast Radio!
August 9th 2007 03:42
How cool was it to be heard by millions (well perhaps not millions) but certainly tens of thousands of peak hour car, bus, ferry and rail commuters this morning as I spent an hour of my life in the studios of one of Sydney’s prime-time radio stations – doing something I’ve always dreamed – playing DJ!
To be precise – I wasn’t actually the DJ – more a guest who brought in a collection of vinyl for the breakfast team to make their selection and put the listening audience to the vote – and dependent on whether or not I subscribed to the vote – I could either play the song in question or go with something completely different.
Well – having carted around 40 LP’s to their Pyrmont studio’s around 6.30 this morning – the team proceeded to rummage through the compilation finally settling tracks from David Bowie – Changes, Robert Palmer - Johnny and Mary, Steely Dan – Reeling in The Years and James Taylor – Fire and Rain.
Having seen the Eagles, Supertramp, Neil Young, INXS, ELO, Elton John, Billy Joel and Carol King discarded – listeners plumped for their choice.
What a hoot !
The down-side was I was completed de-flated by the thought of re-entering the atmosphere of the real world after such a stratospheric hour in my life – but I guess that’s what makes the whole thing special – you’re lifted up and naturally – you’ve got to come down again.
I might be giving a little too much information away about myself as far as things go - but what the heck! Oh for little life moments such as these – tick another one off the list.
Don’t know which of the songs you’d have voted for – and should anyone be interested I’m willing to disclose – but I’d be keen to know which way you would’ve gone.
Play it again Sam . .

You know your station addresses - huh? Nova, 2GB, Vega - there's a few up that way.
TV's certainly interesting, radio is a passion I'd love to move into - and print - well it sounds like you've discovered that sometimes ink does run through your veins.
Perhaps our paths have crossed?
Stay well

Yep - it certainly was a rush (and not only for the fact I had to be down at the station at 6.15am).
It renews your faith in never knowing the good that tomorrow can bring.
Thanks for your kind words.

That's brilliant, especially as you were able to take your own LPs in. What an opportunity, congratulations,

It was a bit of an invitation only type thing really - pretty damned lucky to have scored the gig. But now I've the taste for it - need to network with whoever possible to just get that foot in the door. So spread the word.
Thanks

I had to do a radio movie review live a few months ago and can relate to the buzz you refer too...selecting tunes would be a treat..
Sounds like you had a great time, as for what I would choose....
Steppenwolf - The Pusher
Guess Who - American Woman
Sniff N Tears - Drivers Seat
Santana - Soul Sacrifice

A small taste of gourmet life is sometimes a dangerous thing - you never quite want to go back and eat hamburgers again.

Graveyard shift huh?
Yep - guess there'd be a few upsides to that gig - a few downers as well. You'd probably miss all those great Dem-Tel and Evangelist types on TV though. . .
Thanks for calling by and for your well wishes.
