Five Decades of Music - Your Top Five Artists
July 13th 2008 23:42
As an adjunct to my last post - I thought it would be nice to compile an "Orble" Top 5 from the last 50 years of music and play each of those artists on my radio programme either this week or next.
Ideally I'm looking for a group or individual from each decade that really stamped with authority on the era or simply personified the time.
Would the Beatles, The Stones or The Who do it for you from the 60's?
Would The Bee Gees, The Eagles or ELO be your 70's supergroup.
Does Michael Jackson or Madonna represent all that was the 80's?
Do the boys from U2, Simply Red or INXS mean 90's music to you?
And what of the present day crop of artists?
Remember, one from each decade - and if you like a signature tune - and you never know - it just might get a guernsey on the program as part of the segment.

Phoebe Snow - now there's a name that doesn't pop up on radio much these days.
I remember Phoebe's biggest hit here - from memory 'Every Night' from the late 70's.
A 30-minute sweep of hits from each era isn't a bad idea though - don't want to lose too many listeners from either end of the musical spectrum.
Cheers buddy

1970s - I am going to put The Eagles and The Who in a dead heat here.
1980s - Def Leppard - Prince - INXS
1990s - I will skip the 90s to make up for picking too many in the other decades.
2000s - See my 1990s answer.
I would also like to throw in honorable mentions for some artist that is is hard to say a specific decade for. Either because their prominence was from say 1965-1975, or they have been around so long it is hard to pick a single decade for them.
Creedence Clearwater Revival
Hall & Oates
Billy Joel
Elton John
Rolling Stones
Aerosmith
Pink Floyd
Queen
and finally KISS
Gene

All great choices - it's genuinely hard to single out a defining group or individual - which is what makes pop culture so much fun to discuss.
As for KISS (and I take it your not actually Gene Simmons) - yes I'm a fan - but then again - I was a teen and impressionable . . .
Always a pleasure.

Frank Zappa, Rage Against the Machine - in fact all your selections (Marley excluded) are certainly (in bookmakers terms) real outsiders - great - but real outsiders.
Eclectic selection my friend.

Where's Bruce Springsteen in this group.
Seriously tho, I wonder if the current group of stars have the staying power of any of these stars. Who would have thought that we'd look back fondly on the hair bands such as Bon Jovi? This week it looks like Coldplay is the band to beat but will they last or is it just a wave?

Mum's Word
60's: The Doors
70's: ABBA
80's: Bon Jovi are my personal favourite although U2 probably won out the decade
90's: Live, Alanis Morrisette, Oasis, Pearl Jam, Nirvana
00's: Jet, Wolfmother...I'm at a bit of a loss for the noughties....bloody kids got in the way.

Different generation my friend.
Oft have the thought myself in this disposable world.
The chances that a group influencing the music scene as much as such say Pink Floyd, The Eagles, Doobie Bros, Bee Gees, Beatles, Rolling Stones et al would survive to see out an entire decade is well . . . questionable at best.
I like to use the term Pop Rox for the current genre - a great burst of suddeness which satisfies for the moment but is gone all too quickly.
We live in interesting - if not volitile musical times.
Cheers champ

Why do I do this to myself?
Just when I think I have narrowed it down to a bite sized list - the brains trust throw in a medley of musical who's who.
Do'h.
Nice list though

But as sounds of their times;
60's - Bob Dylan
70's - Curtis Mayfield
80's - Talking Heads
90's - Public Enemy

Dylan! How could I leave Dylan out of the equation?
Curtis Mayfield and Public Enemy are interesting choices - though I have to admit Curtis probably doesn't personify the 70's for mine - but thank goodness for personal diversity - otherwise we'd all still be listening to disco.
What about the noughties JD?

I wanted to go for some figures who'd had a bit of a rep for pushing social boundries.
For the 60's of course, Dylan was taken.

70s - Led Zeppelin / Pink Floyd
80s - The Ramones / Metallica / Chili Peppers
90s - Nirvana / Radiohead / Rage Against the Machine
00s - who knows, has there been anything worth remembering yet? Probably to early to tell. There are some quality metal bands but they hardly go down as all time great songs that everyone will enjoy.
And as for everyone saying that Jamiroquai is a 2000s artist the following albums disagree with you - Emergency on Planet Easth (1993), The Return of the Space Cowboy (1994) and Travelling Without Moving (1996)

Who isn't swept away with ABBA - why I was playing the Best of just the other day while travelling in the Volvo on my way to IKEA.
Now - as for Bananarama - I think you may have some issues

70s-Tough one
80s-Anyone with half a brain knows U2 was birthed in the 80s and I believe so was Sunday Bloody Sunday
90s-. . .Nine inch nails? NIRVANA. Or NIN
2000s-Evanescence. Or we could put NIN here, too. Because NIN screams 'the last 15 years'.

So specific with your Beatles tune - must be a defining song for you - but then again I guess most of us have one defining tune in our arsenal.
Nine Inch nails is an interesting choice too - Nirvana would have been in my top 3 - but NIN - didn't really enter my thinking - thanks!
