World's Greatest TV Cops
June 12th 2008 22:31
Way back when both myself and television were in their infancy - I would sit with my dad and take in all the drama of a cop show labelled - Robert Taylor's Detectives.
From Captain Holbrook through to Johnny Russo - I would suck it all in - oblivious to the influences of what today's PC crowd would dictate as unsuitable viewing for littlies.
Of course there were also shows like Dragnet and the comedy - Car 54 - Where Are You - so it was almost a natural progression for most boys my age to then follow the trials and tribulations of Homocide before a plethora of other copy-cat programs such as Division 4 and Matlock started to hit our screens in the early 70's.
Then came the avalanche.
Hawaii 5-0, Baretta, CHiP's, Petrocelli, Cagney and Lacey, Hill Street Blues, Starsky and Hutch and later NYPD Blue and CSI - not to mention my personal favourite - TJ Hooker (Ouch) . . .
Yes, despite our protestations about what's appropriate viewing - it appears we either love crim's and the whole who done it scenario - or we just love the cops to chase em!
So who's been your favourite TV cop?

Ahhh - blonde moment on my part (and thanks JD for the prompt) - of course Angie Dickinson . . . didn't she set hearts aflutter along with the crims.
Thanks for dropping on by.

Michael Douglas and Karl Malden in Streets of San Francisco - boy how good was that - despite later being relegated to an afternoon timeslot.
And Don Johnson . . . whadda 80's style icon.
How about Serpico and Columbo - not exactly stylish guys but Serpico had a pretty cool kinda beard for the 70's at least.
Thanks champion - apparently 6-8 week recovery on the busted wing.
Cheers

On a side note, a friend of mine is of Italian descent. To get a picture of what he looks like you only need to know that when he and his wife visited Bali about 10 yrs ago, he had people running up to him on the beach asking "Eric Estrada?" Apparently the Balinese really like CHIPS!!!

As far as modern day cops go - Mrs NG loves Booth - in fact I'm (by stealth I guess) hooked on Bones as well.
Nice selection!

Do I have to admit that Mark Harmon (along with Denozo et al) are currently on the top of the Nice Guy list as far as cops (well military type cops anyway) goes.
Can't quite bring myself to wearing one of those caps though.
. . . and I bet he milked the whole Eric Estrada thing for all it was worth too . . . lucky guy.
Stay well

Loved the attitude that Murphy carried off in the role too - somewhere between bad-ass/don't give a s*#t and too damned clever for his own good (with a little compassion thrown in).
Not quite small screen - but nice choice none the less.
Cheers

Max and 99 probably don't quite qualify as cops - but love your thinking.
Thanks for stopping by.

I loved 'animal'. So many great characters from HIlls Street Blues. From Andy Renko through to Joyce Davenport and Howard Hunter (sad that I recall these really isn't it?).
And wasn't the theme song an absolute cracker . . .
Stay well
