Remember Scanlens Bubblegum?
October 5th 2010 20:22
How good was life as a kid when you first discovered that two of your favourite things in life - bubblegum and 'footy' were combined in a single sachet you could buy over the counter.
OK, so there were other distractions for most eight year olds as well like climbing trees, catching cicada's, swimming, teasing girls and running amok - but boy, the excitement of finding that elusive footy star inside a pack of Scanlens was akin to well . . .
And it wasn't just footy either!
There was Kung Fu series cards, King Kong cards, Cricket cards even yes . . . Young Talent Time cards - ouch!
So it was with a little nostalgia that I discovered hidden away at the back of a drawer the other day a small parcel of my youth - around 150 Scanlens footy cards, wow!
The first thing I did was smell them - and to my surprise (or my own imagination) they still had a hint of that wonderful Scanlens bubblegum smell.
It's amazing how the smell of something can transport you back to 'the day' just as music can for most of us - and once again I was that eight-year-old kid traipsing up to the corner shop with my pocket money in hand ready to make the most important purchase of the week.
What proved even scarier was that there's a market out there for these things as well - and what used to cost around 20c for a stick of gum and six cards has proved quite lucrative for some - with cards going for anywhere between $2-$3 each up to over $100 on ebay!
Well, call me foolhardy - but ya know, I just tucked those cards back in the little box they'd been calling home for over 30 years to let them be rediscovered for another time.

MNG, you hit it in one, THAT SMELL...the lurid pink gum, that taste... so chemical... so lovely...
My favourite was Big Charlie, still pink, still that smell, only softer than the stick gum I seem to remember, or maybe it was the heat?
Just tried to find a photo online, and could only get Big Metro/Big Charlie, which had a square wrapper.
Not what I ate, which was the near foot long cable of pink gum, that was the Big Charlie I knew, sitting in the sun by the pool at the end of Cremorne Point with my pals.
Yes the cicadas' constant wheeezy, buzzy, screech song, coming in waves, building to crescendo then sudden decrescendo...those were the days.
And quite right, keep those cards safe, one day, your kiddies will thank you for it!
cheers
