10 completely useless pieces of music trivia
October 23rd 2008 22:48
Simple things (as they say) amuse simple minds . . . and so I'm not ashamed to admit that completely useless trivia has been filling the cavenous recesses of my cranium for far too many years.
Used in context though - this labyrinth of dribble can sometimes amaze and amuse - and sometimes (just sometimes) pass as intelligent scholarship from a widely read and informed individual - ha!
That said - for a little light-hearted reading thought you might all appreciate a few useless pieces of info - which I'm sure you can work into a conversation at sometime over the weekend.
Enjoy!
1) Everyone knows that the Buggles 'Video Killed the Radio Star' was the first video to premire on MTV on August 1, 1981. But the millionth video to air on MTV was also 'Video Killed the Radio Star', aired on MTV February 27, 2000. It's also the 3rd most aired video in MTV history. Peter Gabriel's 'Sledgehammer' is nos. 1.
2) In a contest held by Mersyside Newspaper to see who was the biggest band in Liverpool, back in 1962, one of the main reasons that The Beatles won was because they called in posing as different people and voted for themselves.
3) Most toilets flush in E flat.
4) Beethoven's Fifth, was the first symphony to include trombones.
5) EMI stands for ' Electrical and Musical Instruments'.
6) Elvis Costello worked for a cosmetics company while trying to make it as a musician .
7) As a boy, David Bowie was taught art by Peter Frampton's father, Owen Frampton.
8) 'Wake Me Up Before You Go Go' by Wham! was inspired by a sign Andrew Ridgeley used to put on his bedroom door for his mum to wake him before she went to work;
9) Before becoming Elvis Presley's agent, Colonel Tom Parker ran a troupe of dancing chickens.
10) You can sing the chorus of the Beach Boys "Surfing USA" along with Chuck Berry's "Sweet Little Sixteen"

It's a bit like the whole twinkle twinkle/ba ba black sheep thing really - it'll drive you nuts if you don't have the tune playing in the background though - trust me.
Cheers

You know what they say . . . I could tell you but . . . then I have to shoot you.
Some things are better left as a mystery.
Stay well
