TV Westerns
November 8th 2010 20:15
Anyone out there old enough to remember The Lawman?
How about Bonanza or The High Chaparral?
Maybe Alias Smith and Jones or Maverick . . .
Surely The Texas Rangers or Rawhide?
If none of these mean anything to you - take it as read that you're probably not a TV Western fan - or you've been holed up in another dimension away from tumbleweeds, gunslingers and bar room brawls - all the stuff 'real' television was about in the 50's, 60s and even early 70's.
From Gunsmoke to The Cisco Kid and even fringe dwelling western adventures such as Zorro, The Long Ranger, Rin Tin Tin and F-troop - it's hard to keep a good man in chaps down.
Sadly, attempts to resurrect the genre have failed.
Afterall, westerns are expensive to make and younger studio executives just don't get it. They assume that we all want to watch sexy young actors and actresses who haven't eaten yet this month and talk about nothing in their apartments.
C'mon pards, grab ya Peacemakers and I'll see ya in the salon after sundown!

Don't know that I was even old enough to tell the time yet - but knew exactly when it would be on the box.
In fact - I was surprised to find this clip on YouTube - given I wouldn't have heard (or seen it) in over 40 years - ouch!

Film & TV on DVD
of the classics though, Steve McQueen in Wanted Dead or Alive and James garner in Maverick are my faves. Also Sam Peckinpah's work on The Rifleman makes it ranked with me. Need to mention, 'Have Gun Will Travel as well.
