I Just Don't Get Twitter

July 7th 2009 22:44
Twitter
I just don’t get Twitter!

Perhaps I'm missing the point?

For mine it’s the ultimate triumph of marketing over substance!

The masses have been duped, again!

FINALLY , pop I could not agree with you more, the thing that gets me the most about twitter is that people believe celebrities actually sit there at the emmys, or grammys or whatever , in the middle of the award ceremony surrounded by colleages and importantcies on the blackberrys "halle belle looks hot in her dolce"

AS IF!

People, get lives, get a friend, get a partner, go out, have dinner, see a movie, just don't twitter about it.

Hey Jesus

I'm with you. The fact people honestly believe (no really they do - yeah right) that celebrities 'twitter' or 'tweet' or whatever their PR Flunkeys do - says alot about gullibiity and spin.

Only this morning I heard that Elizabeth Taylor was Twittering - hmmm - does she put the bottle down long enough to free up her hands?

it's a waste of time...Facebook does every thing that twitter does and more..

I kinda get the impression that Twitter is designed for those with ADD.

I didn't get it either when I first joined in but after two months there, I found that it's a nice way to promote my blogs all the while telling people more about myself (although I have no idea why someone would be interested in my ordinary life).

As for the celebrities, yes it's quite a stretch to believe that people like P. Diddy, Britney Spears, Mariah Carey, etc. do their own twittering but more obscure celebs actually do communicate on there. People like writer Harlan Coben, producers Hart Hanson and Stephen Nathan, and underground rappers such as Ryu, Scoop DeVille, Apathy, etc. Not everyone on there is a fraud.

But I still prefer Facebook

Perhaps PictureBook - just post photographs of yourself - no words required.

Oops - did I just stumble on the worlds next greatest idea . . .

LOL, MNG, there's already a PictureBook on the web, only it goes by the name of Zorpia. Now THAT is a waste of time.

I have a personal Twitter account that I used approximately twice, and haven't logged in since. I think it is useless for connecting with friends. Then again, I've pretty much abandoned Facebook and Myspace as well. I'll just call, write, or email if I want to talk to someone. No one needs to know my minute by minute activities. God, I bore myself, why would I subject anyone else to it!?

However, I have found Twitter extremely useful in blog promotion. I have a Twitter account for E.I., and all I use it for is to Tweet whenever I create a new post. It drives a lot of traffic to the site and has gained me a few regular readers. I basically use it as another sort of feed for site updates.

Beyond that, I don't get the hype.

Hmmm, I have a Twitter account too, and have used it once. Maybe I should do the same for traffic. Cheers Natalina.

i joined Twitter primarily to follow Chris Cornell, and by follow i mean spy on . . . he does his own tweets . . . im sure he does . . . he does, right?

i also follow Richard Dawkins and a few other science publications (New Scientist, NY Times, Guardian etc) to hear about all the latest discoveries

ive started playing a game on there called SpyMaster, it lets me assassinate my friends, you cant get more fun than that

Bryn, I think you'd find it very useful for blog promotion. Plus, it gives writers a chance to promote each other. Here's mine if anyone wants an example of what I'm talking about:

Hey Morgan, I see you assassinating people on Twitter all the time! Ha! It gave me a good laugh.

I just assassinated an ambassador

Just bought a Mod. 45 Automatic Knife

It cracks me up! I imagine it would be cathartic

I've heard about twitter but I haven't the foggiest idea what or where it is or how to access it. Is it accessed via an ordinary computer or do you need some special little dealy bop?

Facebook I know...I have Facebook friends from all over the globe. It's a great way to meet people!

Does anyone have time to explain twitter?

Comment by Morgan Bell

Gang

- is it true that those in the military (US that is) have been instructed not to have Facebook - as it can be accessed by terrorists, insurgents etc and the information used against them if captured?

ie: details about family, friends yaddah yaddah

I originally joined to give assignments to my students quickly, but generally use it now to promote my blog. I do get a decent amount of hits although I get a little tired of people wanting to show me their webcams or subscribe to some kind of get rich quick scam. I also plan on joining Morgan's spy ring and working out my anger issues.

I am with Natalina here. I get bored telling myself what I have to do. Why on earth would other people want to know what I am doing - unless of course I make it up.

I often join these things and like you, MNG, I just don't get the point of them but I like to find out about them anyway. A lot of people I know seem to go on a big spluge and then get sick of it and opt out.

By the way Morgan, it looks like you are really having fun with it and I would never deprive you of that. But didn't you hear about the spy who ended up on Facebook? It's not a place where spies are meant to go

I use Twitter mainly to promote my Orble posts but sometimes I have a slight random thought not dissimilar to Morgan - your post title would make a great tweet

I do follow a few celebs and a lot of them do tweet themselves - Lenny Kravitz tweets before he warms vocals onstage and a few other cool things, Ashton Kutcher has a twittering addiction as do many people - I find it kind of pointless and you can do the same thing on Facebook with much more on offer.

Why can't I capture a terrorist financier?? Why??

I never use the personal Twitter account I opened but it is a very useful tool for blog promotion - I got a number of regular readers for my fiction through tweeting it.

You can check out mine if you like here. It's for my vampire website.

So that's what you're doing Morgan. I thought you must have joined MI5 or the CIA

I simply don't get the whole ridiculous tweeting every move you make though. The whole, "I'm taking a shower", "I had bagels for breakfast" thing makes me wonder if people have any lives at all!

Mr. Nice Guy, did you know that Twitter was completed down and crashed, after a few minutes, where Michael Jackson was officially declared dead? Gosh, this one of the craziest thing I even saw, where up to thousands of twitter messages flow in a second!

Twitter is probably one of the biggest non stories in internet history. it does prove that telling everyone is the same as telling no one. unless you are world famous already, millions of people are not paying rapt attention to some twits tweets.

I have a Twitter account.

I signed up for it, looked at it, flinched, and haven't signed in since.

Kinda sad, really.

I think I'm now curious enough to go see what the site actually DOES. (Before I was signing up for some writing contest thingie on Twitter which I never won so kittens.)

I get the impression that so many of these things a little like the fable about the King's New Clothes.

Everyone tells everyone else how good it is - when in reality it's simply a case of 'let's all be individuals . . .. together'.

One word - Bandwagon . . .

As soon as the next 'fad arrives' I tend to think discipiles to "twitter' code will have flown the coop.

In the meantime - I'm sure the creators are feathering their own nest and receiting the verse - ' A bird in the hand is worth . . .

I signed up although have only twittered a handful of times to promote the blog. China doesn't allow access to Twitter and as of a few days ago - Facebook - so I haven't even had a chance to use it as best as I could.

I'm open to most technology and even indulge in the occassional fad - but try as I might - the more people I speak to the more I'm finding that Twittering or Tweeting or whatever it's called - is more a social status calling by those who feel a) the world is geuninely interested in what they're doing at any given time of the day or b) simply want to appear like they're 'up with the latest' in technology.

Perhaps I'm just getting older and cynical.
