When Is Retro Cool?
February 18th 2009 02:01
My kids (err - fashion police) will often take me to task when accommpanying them in public in an attempt to parade their dad as being markedly cool.
Well perhaps not cool - as in Johnny Depp or Orlando Bloom - but cool as in - not a dag.
OK so perhaps I'm well and truly past wearing my Levi's (is that old BTW) down around my knees with the Davenport boxer short label on show for the world to see - but equally I don't trudge around in socks and sandals either.
A retro shirt - apparently is very in - and can mask a myriad of sins - while Dunlop Volley's still hold some kind of credence in the cool stakes amongst kids.
Of course fashion isn't the only issue which raises its head when it comes to retro v cool.
Allegedly retro is everywhere - it just has to be the 'right kind' of retro.
From riding a Vespa to having a rubik's cube alarm clock - it matters (so my kids say at least) that the discerning father know the difference between what's retro 'cool' and what's just plain 'daggy' and old.
While I contend that retro is more about how you carry it off - any advice would be gratefully accepted.

a clean-shaven Ben Affleck with khaki slacks and a cardigan - NOT COOL
Chris Cornell in a cardi - VERY COOL
now im examining my own words and wondering if Ben Affleck would look cool in anything, and if Chris Cornell would look uncool in anything . . . hmmm yeah i think it hinges on how cool the person under the clothes is

Do'h
I thought Ben Affleck was supposedly cool . . . in a "People Magazine" kinda way - guess I got it wrong again.
What makes cool though?
It's probably more a state of mind - and I guess once a geek - always a geek . . . someone should tell Ben perhaps?

"its not who you are on the inside that defines you, its what you do"
or something to that effect
i think Ben is a publicity whore that sold out to be in some really mediocre films . . . he could have been cool if he stuck to the writing and created something decent, but instead he spent a decade looking at himself in the mirror
i think to be humble and genuine and creative is cool
ps: dont ever wear those crocs shoes out in public - very uncool

Talk about a triumph of marketing over style - surely these are a joke - that someone's laughing all the way to the bank on.
