Is It Cool to be a Dag?
July 11th 2007 20:12
Think you're a dag?
For starters - anyone who genuinely believes they'll be 'discovered' or will make a worthwhile living from writing posts on their own site - probably is.
Therapy would be an acceptable reason - looking for a lucrative revenue stream or fame . . . probably isn't.
Having sorted that - I would suggest that a more extensive branch of the genus 'dag' rests with those of us who are open to admitting they have at least one hidden dag chromosome in their biological make-up.
Social alienation is hardly a desirable trait - but one which bank managers, IT staff and accountants have successfully surmounted in recent times. (OK - perhaps not accounants).
Yet there is a recessive 'dag' gene lurking somewhere in all of us.
Fashion dags like to class themselves as 'individuals' with comments such as:
"Fashion should reflect personality, not commercialism"
"You, and not the brand".
"I like to think my fashion is a combination of comfort and a political statement"
Yeah sure!
Musically, dags cite the re-birth of groups such as ABBA and how cool it is to have a turntable again - because vinyl gives depth and an earthy-ness to the artist.
Right!
Or how about those nerdy kids who used to lock themselves away in the darkroom during school lunch hours - you know - the ones who now do fashion shoots for Cosmo or travel for world with National Geographic.
Hang on - what ever happened to the dorks who got involved in debating . . . . . oh yeah - apparently they're doing very well on the public speaking tour.
Then there's those closet dags - who collect everything from Star Wars figures to comic books - but hey that's cool . . . isn't it?
I guess that in the cold light of day, there's no getting round it - looks like being a dag these days is pretty 'hip.
. . . Or was that a daggy thing to say?
