I Was Almost Famous . . .
August 20th 2011 05:25
Pity those poor souls for who history seldom regails - yet whose anonimity is alluded to almost everyday via the simple yet compelling line 'well who remembers who was the second person to . . . . '
Being the first man to set foot on the moon, Neil Armstrong ensured his place in the annals of mankind - yet Buzz Aldrin rarely gets a look in as history's understudy.
Robert Falcon Scott the South Pole on January 18, 1912, only to find the tent and flag of the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen, who had achieved the goal 5 weeks earlier.
Then there was Tenzing Norgay (not ringing any bells?) - well think Edmund Hillary and Everest and I think you'll get the picture.
Sports fans! Second man to break the four minute mile after Roger Bannister - John Landy of Australia 46 days after the good Dr Bannister.
The first person to travel in space was Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin - the second - Alan Shepherd.
For my American cousins - who no doubt will tell you with some pride that John Hancock was the first to sign the Declaration of Independence but remind me who was the second . . . and no cheating!
So many bridesmaids . . .
