How Long Can You Hold Your Breath?
April 8th 2009 22:10
Remember as a kid when you used to have staring contests?
Or how about thumb fights?
Perhaps you would occassionally see how long you could hold a note or my personal favourite - how long you could hold your breath for!
Of course the benchmark for any nine-year-old was a minute - and you would always have a mate put their hand under your nose to ensure you weren't cheating.
But apparently - the average person in good health can hold their breath for about two minutes, but with even small amounts of practice it is possible so they say to increase that time dramatically.
Of course, a factor associated with longer holding times is the consumption of pure oxygen beforehand with the world record for holding your breath after inhaling pure oxygen now around 17 minutes while the record without the pure oxygen, is almost 9 minutes.
Folks - two minutes is still a mighty long time in my books - so perhaps I'm not that average afterall - but 9 minutes - let alone 17 - well that's breathtaking!

You have to pick your washrooms more carefully in future.
