What's The World's Best Television Series?
November 18th 2007 22:01
Sitting down to dinner on Saturday - when the subject of television and Channel 10's decision to screen the series "Friends" came to the table.
"We loved that show" came the initial incursion from one quarter.
"Yeah, we watched it a fair bit too - but we were more Seinfeld fans really", came the sortie from the corner.
"Oh, weren't there some hilarious scenes from that," came the response from the BBQ area - followed quickly by "but I don't know anyone that didn't have a soft spot for Cheers. How funny were Norm and Cliffy?"
. . . and so it went on - series after series was thrust into the limelight.
From oldies such as Star Trek, Robert Taylor's Detectives and Dragnet to Sex And The City, Desperate Housewives and even Happy Days.
So what is (or has been) the best television show (or series) ever?
Were you a Gilligan's Island fan - or does it even rate?
Do soaps such as Home and Away, Days of Our Lives or Coronation Street appear on the radar?
Perhaps you have a penchant for cop dramas such as Hill Street Blues, Starsky and Hutch or Mod Squad?
Would love you to have your say.

I was on the train into the city a couple of weeks back when perched alongside was a young bloke watching his back catalogue of Buffy (The Entire 1st season).
So don't feel too bad - I suspect there's a legion of fans out there.
Thanks for contributing.

A few progs in there that I'm sure will go down as classics in years to come.
Though I suspect The Simpsons have probably already achieved greatness.

Modern day script writers and television in general have programs such as The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Honeymooners, I Love Lucy et al to thank for today's successes.
So much of what we see now have their roots in 50's and 60's sit coms.
The old adage "everything old is new again" is particularly pertinent when it comes to the small screen.
Appreciate your input and generous words.

1. The West Wing
2. The Simpsons
3. Coupling - a british version of Friends.....except actually funny.
4. Buffy the Vampire Slayer
5. Cheers - as you say, who didn't love Norm and Cliffy and want to hang out at a bar where everybody knows your name?

No prizes for guessing who brought up the whole Cheers thing around dinner time at my place huh?
West Wing wasn't too bad either - had a real following - even when it went from comercial television to the ABC.
All outstanding choices.
Thanks for stopping by.

Fawlty Towers.
I don't mind The Office (UK version) and Extras. I like Ricky Gervais' humour.
But you can't go past Fawlty Towers. Only 12 episodes and it penetrates our cultural psyche like no other show.
Love & stuff

Yeah - the Simpson's are great aren't they. And you know - never got into Seinfeld until it was almost too late - then couldn't get enough of it.

Blakes 7 - when Blake was still in it.
The Goodies - Biting satire that took no prisoners.
Cowboy Bebop - Spike verses Vicious very cool

The Original Mission Impossible was pretty cool and Baywatch - well what can you say?
It created a parody of itself and made a star of the Hoff - complete with his red speedo's.

Had to go out and buy the entire Cheers series on DVD earlier this year - it's compulsive viewing.
. . . and you know Earl is such a hit with everyone at home - even Miss 10-year-old gets her homework done in time to sit down and watch.

but my all time favourite....(drum roll)....is...
SHINTARO!!!!!
I had an actual kimono...ok so it was a girl's kimono brought back from Japan by one of my sisters...a sword, (made from an old curtain rail), almost real stars to throw (my brother made them out of steel Coke can tops), and I played Samurai with my brothers, fighting to the death...nearly for real at times, in our backyard till sundown!
Oh, and running one fott immediately in front of the other, like Tombei the Iga ninja!
cheers for the memories!
AND CHEERS FOR THE LABOR PARTY!!!!!!!!

Shintaro!
Phantom agents did it for me in the 60's. Remember as a young bloke thinking that Ninja's could jump backwards into trees. That star knives were a a part of everyone's arsenal and that the line "Remember Only Use a Gun As A Last Resort" was a mantra to live by.
Oh - and that damned Toyota Crown that they all jumped into - did Phantom Agents (followed straight after by Shintaro) have a lasting impact on me - never!
