What's The World's Best Television Series?

November 18th 2007 22:01
Sitting down to dinner on Saturday - when the subject of television and Channel 10's decision to screen the series "Friends" came to the table.

"We loved that show" came the initial incursion from one quarter.

"Yeah, we watched it a fair bit too - but we were more Seinfeld fans really", came the sortie from the corner.

"Oh, weren't there some hilarious scenes from that," came the response from the BBQ area - followed quickly by "but I don't know anyone that didn't have a soft spot for Cheers. How funny were Norm and Cliffy?"

. . . and so it went on - series after series was thrust into the limelight.

From oldies such as Star Trek, Robert Taylor's Detectives and Dragnet to Sex And The City, Desperate Housewives and even Happy Days.

So what is (or has been) the best television show (or series) ever?

Were you a Gilligan's Island fan - or does it even rate?

Do soaps such as Home and Away, Days of Our Lives or Coronation Street appear on the radar?

Perhaps you have a penchant for cop dramas such as Hill Street Blues, Starsky and Hutch or Mod Squad?

Would love you to have your say.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer (now that makes me sound sooo 15), closely followed by Veronica Mars and Firefly. Love Heroes, too. And the first season of Alias was pretty good, as was the first season of Lost. Oh, and the Simpsons, of course.

For me the top six would be:

Firefly
Simpsons
Star Trek Next Gen
Buffy
Futurama
Deadwood

Best ever?? I'm probably going to screw up the survey but, I have to go with the OLD Dick Van Dyke show! That's my preference. But the PROPER answer should probably be the Honeymooners or I Love Lucy!

I'm interested to see the results!!!!!! DYNAMITE idea!!!!!

Hey Sonya

I was on the train into the city a couple of weeks back when perched alongside was a young bloke watching his back catalogue of Buffy (The Entire 1st season).

So don't feel too bad - I suspect there's a legion of fans out there.

Thanks for contributing.

A few progs in there that I'm sure will go down as classics in years to come.

Though I suspect The Simpsons have probably already achieved greatness.

Modern day script writers and television in general have programs such as The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Honeymooners, I Love Lucy et al to thank for today's successes.

So much of what we see now have their roots in 50's and 60's sit coms.

The old adage "everything old is new again" is particularly pertinent when it comes to the small screen.

Appreciate your input and generous words.

Ohhhh, good question. I have a few favourites:

1. The West Wing
2. The Simpsons
3. Coupling - a british version of Friends.....except actually funny.
4. Buffy the Vampire Slayer
5. Cheers - as you say, who didn't love Norm and Cliffy and want to hang out at a bar where everybody knows your name?

No prizes for guessing who brought up the whole Cheers thing around dinner time at my place huh?

West Wing wasn't too bad either - had a real following - even when it went from comercial television to the ABC.

All outstanding choices.

Thanks for stopping by.

Hi MNG,

Fawlty Towers.

I don't mind The Office (UK version) and Extras. I like Ricky Gervais' humour.

But you can't go past Fawlty Towers. Only 12 episodes and it penetrates our cultural psyche like no other show.

Love & stuff

I'm sure Manuel would be smiling on the other side that Spanish dial of his knowing you're a fan of Fatty Owls, Warty Towels, Flowery Twats - err Fawlty Towers.

Stay well

The Avengers - nice!

I loved The Champions as a kid - there was always something about Sharon McCredie and her two co-horts.

Thanks for visiting.

Hi MNG

Oh yes, my dad is a big Avengers fan and we'd watch it growing up. I loved Steed's car and wanted one...Mrs MNG and I have a few things in common!!

Great topic as always, MNG

This one's a mix of old and new, mainly classic 70's and 80's tv i grew up with, and current shows that have inspired my screenwriting.

Knight Rider
Bionic Woman (the new version's improving with each episode too, but the original is still the best)
Get Smart
Monty Python's Flying Circus
Battlestar Galacica (reverse of the above, the new series is, at times, amazing)
Heroes
My Name is Earl (best of the current comedy shows by far)

Do I really need to spell it out?

S.A.T.C.

Lol. And SeaChange, my other all time favourite.

Some others I loved:

Mother and Son
Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em
Fawlty Towers
Keeping Up Appearances
We Could Be Heroes and Summer Heights High
I Dream of Jeannie

And those that are still happening:

The Vicar of Dibley (I only see this on Pay, it's still going isn't it?)
Little Britain
The Chaser
House
The Librarians
Medium

There are probably more.

I don't really watch television shows anymore, and I don't get cable, so the great cable stuff I end up being lent it on DVD ....

In no particular order:

Twin Peaks (first two seasons)
Six Feet Under
The Young Ones
Fawlty Towers
The Office

I've always considered TV shows on a 'Tier' system, for some reason. The absolute top tier are, without a doubt, The Simpsons and Arrested Development. There's a bunch of stuff on the second tier, while The Sopranos sits alone somewhere between the first and second (it's such an amazing series!). There's a lot of great stuff on TV, makes my trips to JB Hi-Fi very expensive.

Yeah - the Simpson's are great aren't they. And you know - never got into Seinfeld until it was almost too late - then couldn't get enough of it.

Get Smart for being consistantly funny.

Yes Minister - I wish someone would make something like this again.

Blakes 7 - when Blake was still in it.

The Goodies - Biting satire that took no prisoners.

Cowboy Bebop - Spike verses Vicious very cool

Current Favorite is - Ergo Proxy - A very trippy Anime.

But there's a left of centre (weird humour type) string running through your choices.

The Young Ones for me - they were made into gold by the Bolovski characters played by Alexei Sayle.

A couple that you may not have seen - Sean's Show, it used to be on ABC before English Soccer (pre premier league days) on ABC.

And one on Foxtel (UKTV) - Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps is pretty funny

MacGyver - the man who could built a nuclear weapn from a paperclip. What a classic!

The Original Mission Impossible was pretty cool and Baywatch - well what can you say?

It created a parody of itself and made a star of the Hoff - complete with his red speedo's.

Thanks for sharing - hope you find the time to drop in again - you're always welcome.

Best...best of all..in my heart of hearts, although I adore Get Smart, The Young Ones, Monty Python's Flying Circus, The Munsters, The Addams family, The Honeymooners, (now that'll confound a lot of them!), I Dream of Jeanie, Yes Minister, Steptoe and Son, Alf Garnett, (although he would probably make me cringe today, I was but a nipper when I saw it !) , Outer Limits, Twilight Zone, Hogan's Heroes, Lost In Space, Doctor Who, Red Dwarf...and I could go on...and on...

but my all time favourite....(drum roll)....is...

SHINTARO!!!!!

I had an actual kimono...ok so it was a girl's kimono brought back from Japan by one of my sisters...a sword, (made from an old curtain rail), almost real stars to throw (my brother made them out of steel Coke can tops), and I played Samurai with my brothers, fighting to the death...nearly for real at times, in our backyard till sundown!

Oh, and running one fott immediately in front of the other, like Tombei the Iga ninja!

cheers for the memories!

AND CHEERS FOR THE LABOR PARTY!!!!!!!!

Shintaro!

Phantom agents did it for me in the 60's. Remember as a young bloke thinking that Ninja's could jump backwards into trees. That star knives were a a part of everyone's arsenal and that the line "Remember Only Use a Gun As A Last Resort" was a mantra to live by.

Oh - and that damned Toyota Crown that they all jumped into - did Phantom Agents (followed straight after by Shintaro) have a lasting impact on me - never!
