Who Is The World's Greatest Actor?

December 26th 2008 19:37
Was reading an interesting piece yesterday on who actors themselves hold in the highest esteem?

The list was as interesting as it was diverse - with a few shock omissions.

But who do you place atop the heap?

Would Marlon Brando place in your top 5?

Would Meryl Streep, Denzel Washington or Jack Nicholson crack your all-time list?

Johnny Depp, Al Pacino . . . would love to have you list your top 5.

MNG--this is another one I'll have to keep tabs on. I like different actors for different things. The Duke is my cowboy but Kevin Spacey is pretty good in other roles although I can't buy him rounding up a posse to get the bad guys!

"The greatest" is always hard to define because some great actors are not necessarily my favourites and sometimes some of my favourites I wouldn't necessarily call the greatest actors.

My list would include Marlon Brando, Merryl Streep, Kevin Spacey, Cate Blanchett, Helen Mirren, Bette Davis, Sean Connery, Robert de Niro, Al Pacino and Jack Nicholson.

It would probably also include...........no, I'll stop there!

How foolish of me not to have considered that . . .

I take it you enjoy music theatre - given how you were warming up your vocal chords there - me, me, me, me, me

Hey moonglow

I know its sacrilege - but could never quite get the Heath Ledger thing on film . . . always thought his calling was more stage and Elizabethan.

Nice choices though . . . Freeman's a standout for sure.

Other than the 'Pirates' series - I would have to say I'm not a big fan either - but hate is such a strong word.

Some classic choices for your others though - absolutely concur with Connery.

You're right about Sir Alec though.

The list could do your mind in huh?

Redford, McQueen, Spacey and of course your hero - Marion - perhaps a top 5 is a tough call - and they don't come any tougher than the Duke.

Cheers

Hey - it's a tough call - but unfortunately never got onto the Mirren bandwagon - think the world is looking for another Davis - and hate to say it - but there's simply no-one since Streep who has done it for me.

Blanchett is a good actress - but when you have the likes of Bullock, Kidman et al - it does make Kate etc shine.

Hope your well

Hi Linh

A couple of stand-out's there!

Michael Cain falls through the cracks for mine though - given his penchant for taking less than selective roles - including that 'clanger' with Stallone called Escape to Victory - ouch.

Cheers

Wondered if anyone would include Foster - such longevity and very under-rated - and of course one of the few who made the transition from child star to 'legitimate' adult status.

BTW - Viggo in Eastern Promises was tremendous.

Thanks for stopping by

Hey Jeri

Robin Williams has never really been taken 'seriously' as an actor in my opinion - which is to the world's loss. I guess due to the diversity of his roles - and his comedic upbringing - the more flippant among us probably don't see the forest for the trees.

Nice choice/s.

Katherine vs Audrey is always a quandry in my books.

It's no surprise that Brando and Davis are common denominators in so many equations though.

Thanks for stopping by - nice mix of the old and the new . . .

well I have been away from orble for sometime, but because this is such a hot topic i might throw in an over or two from the Paddington end... (The aussie's need some bowlers at the moment!!)

- 100% agree with Kevin Spacey... the man is a genious. He was even good in the terrible movie 21... but not even he could carry that snake eyes...

- Speaking of Snake Eyes... Terrible movie, but i do love Nicolas Cage at his best... (Lord of War and cult hits...)

- I can't believe for the life of me that SIR Anthony Hopkins has yet to be mentioned... one of the greats... I mean he is Sir Anthony afterall.. His portayal of Hannibal Lecter earned the title best screen villain of all time, an oscar, and a place in immotality and all for 16mins of on-screen time... not bad work... He is also brilliant in Fracture (shame about the ending) and we won't mention The World's Fastest Indian... cute movie, but not his best work.

- And I know the list can go on forever... but if you ever need a random monalogue that has little to do with a movie but take up 5 minutes of time, there is only one man for the job... Christopher Walken!! his cameo in Pulp Fiction is hillarious and his spill in Pool Hall Junkies (Cult classic - but honestly a crap movie) and Catch me if you can, are a riot. You are left wondering if it has anything to do with the movie, but are always entertaining nontheless...

Actually, after mentioning Hopkins... I wonder who you guys think is the greatest villain or character in movies??

Really difficult question, but if there was five i would have to pick they would have to be based on their performances. Heres my top five;

Min-sik choi
(oldboy)
Sean Penn (iam sam)
Greg kinnear (pisses excellence in any role i have seen him in)
Audrey Tautou (Amelie)
Bill Murray (his latest works are phenomenal especially in Wes Andersons stuff)

Honourable mentions;

Andy Lau (infernal affairs)
Kevin Spacey (American Beauty)
Nicholas Cage (adaptation)
Jürgen Vogel (Die Welle - haven't seen it but apparently he pulls off a powerful performance)

dear folks, Well, Golllly... geez whiz! you all seem to make good sense here...mr nice guy is reallly nice!!!! and thats coool!!!
It seems to me that when i think of the best actor/actress I got to all the movies sytored in that certain part of my alcohol washed cerebrum...and i keep going to little clips from multi-movies that have become classic lines associated wioth those actors/actresses...you know Bogarts 'play it again sam' or the duke sayin 'pilgrim'; or brando "i'm going to make you an offer you can't refuse"; Connery English wit and do8uble Entendre; or someone with bette davis presence but it all comes down to how that person made you FEEL after the scene/movie and thaan you know that you have to consider a whole lot of thesbians that were stars but never received kudos but they made people FEEL. Mae west, monroe, mary astor, phil silvers, mcqueen, eastwood, betty grable, donald o'connor...the list goes on...because they made ya FEEL good...not a great commodity in abundance when i leave a movie these days...yeah they might be tlaented good...but i don't feel that inner stufdf sommetimes...

Always a tough one. Cate Blanchett, Ralph Fiennes, Judi Dench just to name a few. Sometimes it can be quite difficult to compare the current day performances with the ones of yesteryear.

Robert Carlyle, Micheal Pitt, and Guy Pearce are amazing actors from the boys camp

You're right about a couple of things - not the least that we need some new talent from the Paddington - we'd be doing it tough to knock over a paddock side at the moment!

A couple of great choices. Christopher Walken is horribly diverse - everything from Blast from the Past to damned Fat Boy Slim Video clips - he does have an impressive kit bag when it comes to not only film credits but consistent kudos.

No doubt see you in the Brewongle Stand this Saturday . . .

Gary Oldman?

Wow - Sid and Nancy and the Contender were some of his best work - but certainly wouldn't have thought to put him in a Top All Time 5.

No doubt about it - you certainly are full of surprises!

Stay well and every best wish for 2009

Ya know - two words jumped out at me when I read your comment - 'Phil Silvers'.

Sure the Mary Astors and even Donald O'Connors of this world (despite his efforts in talking with mules) could rightfully mount an argument in their favour - but Phil Silvers?

Whadda guy!

Top marks to you champion.

Always tough to compare like with like . . . how do you match up Charles Chaplin against someone like Robin Williams or Gable against Selleck - yep - its alll pretty subjective huh.

Nice of you to drop by.

Bill Murray was pretty good in Groundhog Day . . . as for Christopher Reeve - well . . . he had his moments I guess - however there is no doubt about his bravery in the face of what was an absolute tragedy though.

A few I think captured the essence of acting and its ability to morph were:

Montgomery Clift
Lon Chaney
Marlon Brando
John Cazale
Klaus Kinski
Peter Lorre
Robert Downey Jnr
Mickey Rourke

For women:
Jennifer Jason Leigh
Ellen Burstyn
Susan George
Gena Rowlands
Anita Eckberg
Elizabeth taylor
