Hate, Hate, Hate

June 19th 2008 02:22
Have you ever really hated a movie?

Not just disliked - but truly loathed!

I'm not talking about a "oh - they spoiled the thing by rewriting a scene" kinda film I'm talking about really, really 'hating' a movie.

The sort of hate when you leave the cinema feeling completely ripped off, you drive home with a dose of road rage, you snap at your friends, the dog, the cat for days, trapped in a mood.

Your mind spins over and over through the abject awfulness of the whole thing.

Perhaps its an obscure piece of kitsch (Sex Lives Of The Potato Men) or something mainstream (dare I even suggest The Spice Girls Movie?).

Help me out . . . I'm tired of pulling wings off fly's.

Hey MNG,

Great question. I agree with Cibbuano, Indiana Jones sucks the big one. I was so disappointed. I don't think I have been that mad when I left a cinema in a long time. I even posted about it, even though it was totally off topic for my blog.
Man, I'm getting mad from the crap and laziness all over again.

Cheers,
Bec

I hated so many movies for so many reasons.
Usually they were big hits at the box office.

Superman: The Quest for Peace = The Quest for Puke!

The Trial of Billy Jack = I still hate hippies because of this film.

Ghost Ship = Ghost Sh*t

V for Vendetta = So anarchy is better than fascism huh?

300 = 3 chundred

The Wombles Movie = Kill me now

Monty Python's Meaning of Life = No meaning and less life. (Yes I am a rebel in saying that)

Congo = Drongo of the Jungle.

Starship Troupers 2 = Now ST1 was good. This only destroyed that good feeling.

Showgirls = How could a movie about naked women put me to sleep? Honestly how?

Battlefield Earth = Grunting cave men learn to fly Harrier Jump Jets and blow up alien planets. Yer!

Judge Dread = The cover alone was warning enough but no I had to go and watch this offense to the mind.

Xanadoooooo..ooo..ooo = No need to explain how much this changed my appreciation of ELO.

the ones that immediately come to mind are

the Nancy Meyers pathetic unrealistic women collection ie: Somethings Gotta Give, and The Holiday

the Baz Luhrman irritatingly slapstick collection ie Strictly Ballroom, and Moulin Rouge

all James Bond movies

the old musical South Pacific

the aussie movies Garage Days, and The Castle

The Number 23 (stupid)

Superbad (misogynist)

Desperation (thinly veiled bible lesson)

The Bridges of Madison County (too many martyrs)

haha i think i should stop now before my hate list eclipses your post

Firstly; let me say, and I don;t care what people think about this, but I LOVE the Rocky movies. Watching 1 through to 5 is an epic adventure.

BUT Rocky 6 titled 'Rocky Balboa' I HATE! it ruins the entire Rocky legacy. Too old, too cheesy, they made huge changes to the lives of the character to explain why people are gone and others act the way they do. it is sh**.

HATE IT

Best you take in a nice Cary Grant number and a cuppa tea

Hmmmm.

Now I quite liked Rocky Balboa (and while the pretense of a 60 year old man boxing a 20-something and getting away with it doesn't really gel) it certainly beats what I thought was a pretty lame No.5 - what with losing the entire Balboa estate and the whole "home team" mantra.

Ouch!

Mind you - I did go to the expense of buying the boxed set - so nuff said perhaps

There's actually not that many movies that I have hated. Generally I love the movies that most people consider to be bad movies (I consider myself a connoisseur of the bad movie - my dvd collection will back this up).

My most hated movie of all time is MAGNOLIA. I can't even describe how much I hated that bloody film. Firstly it meandered on for about 17 hours (or at least felt like it). Was boring and ended stupidly. I hated hated hated it (weirdly, I love the soundtrack....Aimee Mann is brilliant. Only good thing about that stupid movie was discovering Aimee). Sure, Tom Cruise actually showed that he could act in the movie........but by god I hated everything about it.

When it comes to loving the movies most people hate - I think you and I (cultural demons that we are) almost corner the market

Two films which really irked me though (not that I necessarily didn't like them) when I was younger were 2001 - which made no sense to a 12-year-old and a little later - 1984 - which really did scar me for days afterwards - as an impressionable teen.

Stay well - and keep watchin' the trash - I'll be thinking of you next time Batchelor Party, Porky's or Splash makes its way to the small screen

Hmm, good question. At the moment I can't think of many I truly hated apart from Magnolia that Kylie mentioned. It seemed to go on for about a week, I honestly thought I was going to keel over from utter boredom. Blurghh!!

It'll take some tracking down, but look for a film called Fantasma by Lisandro Alonso (Argentina, 2006). It's worth searching for -- this easily the worst film I have ever seen in my life.

You've aroused my curiousity (well done).

Given comments such as:

I hate having to give this a 1/10, because that implies that it was up to 10% good. It barely qualifies as a zero. Do not, under any circumstances, watch this film. It has no artistic merit, no entertainment value, nothing -- ABSOLUTELY NOTHING -- to recommend.

It completely screams - WATCH ME.

KylieW - are you up for it?

Are you kidding?

I'm still contemplating the 'real' reasons that movie didn't win an Oscar - guess they just don't appreciate the artistic merits of a 63 VW - so Brando in its method acting style too!

ok...after some consideration.. I remembered taking my nephew to the drive in to see, the last in the series of the Keanu Reeves film..(brain is blocking its name...), the virtual world one filmed in Sydney... slo mo FX in fight scenes... damn it, I hated it so much I can't remember its name.. oh THE MATRIX!!!

Well, the last in that series, about half way through, I looked over at my nephew and asked him what he thought, "It's shit!"

I agreed, we backed the car out and went to watch another film on the other side of the drive in. Lucky for us it was a three film marathon deal and three screens to choose from!

And yes, Magnolias... saw a bit of it on TV, and turned it straight off!

Oh God, far too many! I did a post quite a while back about movies that have made people walk out of the cinema and it was fun seeing how many movies are actually loathed.

Personally, I hated 10000BC, Metal Skin, Legally Blonde 2...there are many more. But the all time most ridiculous annoying, horrible, badly acted piece of utter crap was Troy. Every single cast and crew member (except for Eric Bana who managed to do something with the tripe he was given) should be hung, drawn and quartered. The usually lovely Rose Byrne yelling out a nasal Kath & Kim like "Noiii" made me want to take off my shoe and throw it at the screen. I'm glad I got that out, I feel much better now. Oooh, anger much?

Thanks for the therapy MNG!

Morgoan,

you are DEAD RIGHT about troy and Orlando... and of course the moment we see Brad's donger..am I gettign movies confused..didn;t he jump into bed with one of them...the guys I mean..

anyhoo, Morgan is WRONG about 007!!

LEAVE SEAN CONNERY ALONE!!!

I still think he was the quintessential Bond, and I love the gadgets, and Q and phew...ok.. so he was the womanisers' pin up boy.. come to think of it, they were great films to see in the 60's... when I was a wee chappie.. not so much now..

OH and MNG, the drive in was in Melbourne, a thre screen set up, still going really strong, and in fact another one opened up in the Dandenong Mountains, which we never got to. My nephew had never been to a drive in, and the last time I had been to one was in 1976 I think!!

It was great fun, and spent about $500- in the canteen or whatever its called.

cheers

P.S. Are there still drive ins in Sydney? The ones you mentioned, are they working? Maybe we should organize an Orble excursion to the drive in one week end, that would be fun!! What about it Bryn?? hehe!

You're a genius my friend. What an outstanding concept!

There is only one left operating in Sydney after they closed down Bass Hill late last year.

It's the Blacktown Twin - to which Mrs NG and myself make a point of still taking all three daughters - not only because it's great fun but with the view that one day it too will vanish and the kids will hopefully be able to recount the fun of piling into the back of the car or having deck chairs out and watching the movies.

It's a real community atmosphere - bogan a little perhaps - but hey - so what!

Brilliant!
